PhuketPals III: Phuranakan
Breakfast at Charms Resort is decent but not great. After eating, we went upstairs to the pool to menyundal. Trust SimonLover to be the perfect artistic director for erotic photoshoots. The locker room had a nice urinal area with a floor-to-ceiling window. We were so into it that we nearly didn't notice the cleaner. Enough with the indoor photography, we switched over to the pool. All sorts of colourful swimwear made an appearance, and we were all showing off our back-arching skills. Did we do any swimming? Of course not.
The main event of the day was to visit the Old Town. Surprisingly, Phuket has a heritage of Peranakan culture thanks to the tin mining boom. The Grab dropped us at One Chun Cafe & Restaurant, listed on Michelin Select. We were very lucky to get a table because the lunch crowd was crazy. The food was amazing, and value for money. Nothing like the tourist traps at Patong. The deep-fried prawns with sweet tamarind sauce, and stir-fried crab meat with curry powder was so delicious!
One of the must-visit places in Phuket Old Town is the Peranakan Museum with its iconic clock tower. Many tourists also take photos at the pedestrian crossing with the Sino-Portuguese building as a backdrop. The weather was so hot that I just wanted to hide in the shade. My cap and skimpy shorts could only do so much. Another heritage building was On On Hotel where we saw a couple of newlyweds taking their bridal shoot.
One could only take in so much old town charm without ducking into a cafe to cool down. Torry's Ice Cream had a great colonial charm with much attention to detail, however the service level was really a put off. The Signature Sundae and Bi Co Moi was generally dull. Dessert din't quite hit the spot, so we made a coffee stop at RUSH.
By late afternoon, KH and I took off to Sacred Heart Church hoping to attend the sunset mass there. Unfortunately, the chapel wasn't open. We tried to get a Grab back to Patong, but with the horrible traffic, we couldn't get our request (both JustGrab and GrabBike) fulfilled. In the end, we just relied on our own two feet. Timing was just right as we were able to have a romantic sunset walk by the beach to commemorate the eve of our 17 years together.
