For several years now, William Yap Yai Leong had been producing gay-themed plays in Chinese that offer laughter, eye candy, and of course the compulsory public service announcement. Very popular among the Chinese-speaking gay community. KH and I watched "People Like Us" in 2014 and followed up with "Long Term Relationship" a year later. The previous installment was "One Night Stand", but I didn't catch that. The latest was "BFF" which we nearly missed too because the tickets sold like hot cakes. The plot revolved around seven friends, each with their own problems, bringing at least seven social issues to the table. Quite a mouthful really. Unlike myself, KH is quite casual about his sexuality in the workplace. He often tells me his coming out stories to random colleagues. And he has several sisters at the office. Just the other day, he introduced me to CP over lunch at Baba Nyonya by Sambal Chilli , Avenue K. The restaurant replaces Swensen's which was never popular at that location. We ordered some dishes-- Kapitan curry chicken, omelette, and sambal okra. Taste-wise it was quite good, but the price is a little on the high side for the portion that we got. Anyway, the star of the lunch was his colleague, not the food. He had plenty of stories to tell. An insight into the younger generation of gays. Good to hear that while he was in school, homosexuality wasn't an issue at all. The straight boys weren't threatened at all and seemed to love indulging in some sexual ambiguity as well. As an unrelated follow up from last year's gay-themed play "People Like Us", the producers presented "Long Term Relationship" and of course KH bought tickets. It was lovely to see so many gay lous congregate at KLPAC to catch some laughs and see some steamy action on stage. Last year we had Evan Siao, but this time we were only left with John Tan. In the previous play, John Tan played a guy who was swayed by Evan Siao's hotness. This time round, he played a flamboyant character. Must admit that his acting skills improved a lot. Much less wooden. A friend of mine commented that it was because he playing 'himself'. Haha. As the title suggests, the play revolves around a couple who had been together for years. However, infidelity, work pressure and lack of communication threatened to destroy the relationship. The story was narrated by Douglas Wong who played the super-loved tarot reader, Tata RoTata. On the second day of my solo Vancouver excursion, I chose to go to Davie Street, the gay area of Vancouver. Just a few weeks before, they had a big pride event there and I heard that 100,000 revellers attended. Once again, I slowly strolled out from the hotel. Some elevation on certain stretches but definitely walkable. The first landmark I came across was English Bay Beach. There was a cute art installation at Morton Park nearby, called "A-maze-ing Laughter" by Yue Minjun. A cheerful bunch of bronze sculptures. Took some pics, then walked down to the beach to spy on some shirtless hunks. Too little, too far. On Davies Street, I kept my eyes peeled for signs of gayness. A little rainbow flag here, a splash of colour there, a hairy-chested Superman sticker in the window, and some left over Pride decorations in the window.
