Christmas in the North: Day

Loh Bak

Bright and early the next morning, we ventured to Kafe Ping Hooi for breakfast with The Tribe. The place is home to Tiger Char Kway Teow, KH's top pick for his Penang CKT fix. The place is definitely maintains an old school vibe with wooden booths and vintage mosaic flooring. The Loh Bak is also quite amazing. Cutiepie's parents had invited us to a Christmas lunch at their house, so we had find a place to kill some time. Queensbay Mall was pretty close to Paya Terubong, so that was our pick. Their creative director's choice of fire-red Christmas trees is really out of this world. Wonder if the decision is related to the fact that CNY is hot on the heels of Christmas. Did some aimless shopping, and later ended up at Coffee Bean for our daily allowance of caffeine.

Fiery Christmas Trees

It was nice to visit Cutiepie's childhood home, and see how a traditional Catholic household celebrates Christmas. Glad to see her parents, and I got to meet her sister too. The hot day was remedied with cold beer, non-halal fruit cake, and muruku. At the dining table, we got to sample some great home cooking.

Christmas at Home

After the Christmas lunch, KH and I met up with Drew for some cafe-hopping in the heart of Georgetown. Had to brave the traffic, the parking, the crowds, and the heat.

  1. Le Petit Four - full house
  2. Narrow Marrow - full house
  3. The Maker - GO, GO, GO
Once you reach Plan C, one couldn't be bothered anymore. The Maker is actually pretty nice with a high ceiling, lots of plants and strong air-conditioning. One can only sit around so long after the coffee cups had been emptied, and only crumbs were left of the cakes. We ventured out again taking in the views along Lebuh Armenian and Lebuh Cannon. Lots of heritage architecture, but very touristy too. Our batteries were running low, so we called it a day, and headed back to the hotel for a nap.

Relax

You know why all the Lor Bak, CKT and much hawker food are good in Georgetown areas??? It's the natural mountain waters from the various water reservoirs. I am not kidding.
