Sirih Pulang Ke Gagang III : Homebound

On the final day of our Kuantan trip, we got up early to pack up and prepare to check out of the homestay. We met up with Mr and Mrs Y at Wong Ah Jang to visit Mrs Y's bedridden mother for a little while. She was alert, but needed an oxygen concentrator to breathe properly.

Nasi Kerabu

Ventured out of town for our breakfast. For the best food, one must be willing to travel. Mek La's scrumptious Kelantanese cuisine is located at Permatang Badak, a village located outside of town. The place was huge, able to accommodate a hundred or more customers. Must try items there are the nasi kerabu, nasi minyak, laksam, and pulut ikan kukus goreng. And they make a great teh tarik too.

Pulut Gaul Nyior

After breakfast, we ventured back to town for frozen seafood. The original plan was to go to Beserah to get fish from the fishing villages there, but Mrs. Y gave us an easier option. The frozen seafood seller was practically hidden in a stationery shop. One would never guess that there are fish and prawns in there. Gratitude left with several kilograms of prawns meant for CNY, but I heard they didn't last a week after he returned to Klang. LOL. Before leaving Kuantan, we paid another visit to the goldsmith to pick up Apollo's mended chain.

Frozen Fish

When SK and Gratitude travel together, they usually stop at Bukit Tinggi for their favourite steamed fish. Unfortunately, their usual restaurant was not open. Hopped over to Canton Kitchen instead. The food was disappointing except for the pai kuat wong.

Once we were done eating, it was time for some shopping. Bought some vegetables, but mum was most interested in the chicken eggs. The locals sell a specialty variety called "Horse Grass" eggs. Supposedly the chickens are fed "Horse Grass" and it improves on the flavour. We gave it a try and were not disappointed. Get more next time!

I really love to eat Nasi Kerabu and Laksam! Yummy lah.

Horse Grass eggs??? It is a must buy when I next pass that village. I am fond of eggs and would pay any price for prized ones like this. Do they have golden eggs?
