Merdeka With Mei

The morning market was a little quiet during the long Merdeka weekend. Mooncakes had invaded the place, taking over durian. Not long after I arrived, I received a text from Mei asking if I was at the OUG Morning Market. She had Princess J in tow, and we had breakfast together at Niu Niu Kulai Beef Noodles. Princess J was in a good mood because Mei had bought her Elsa and Sofia the First stickers. We ate pan mee from a stall in front of the shop. Both of us opted for the torn variety which was very smooth, nearly as good as Taman Naga Emas. The little girl opted for a bowl of beef balls.



Mei revealed the reason that Princess J agreed to an excursion to the morning market-- to go to her favourite herbal tea shop! She had already started to complain that she was too tired to walk. Every time she whined, we would tell her that Kang Won Herbal Tea was just a few steps away. Every week, I pass by that shop without giving it much notice. It was my first time there. The interior is very comfortable, like a quiet cafe. On the menu is a variety of chilled pre-bottled herbal teas (there are limited herbal that are served warm), herbal jelly, and herbal soups. Adding a hipster touch, herbal teas are served in delicate glassware and arty pottery. Princess J really enjoyed the chrysanthemum tea, while mum and I tried the herbal jelly. The herbal jelly had a soft texture, and was quite strong in terms of flavour. I still prefer the one from My Little Herbal Tea Pot right across the road.





Mei surprised my mum with one of her signature handmade handbags that upcycle coffee bean sacks. They are really cute, and unique. Don't know where she finds the time to do it in between managing business, and taking care of Princess J. Mum really liked the bag and immediately started using it.



Made an insane decision to go to Sunway Pyramid in the afternoon. Picked up SK on the way out. As feared, the traffic was bad towards the mall. Our grumbling stomachs made me turn back to the shops behind of the mall. Noticed an Ipoh Ais Kopi, so we stopped there for lunch. SK was impressed with the curry noodles, toast, and coffee there.







Once we had settled our hunger, we reattempted entry to Sunway Pyramid. Managed to bypass the horrid jam by parking at Sunway Clio Hotel. The mall was really jam-packed with shoppers. We went from floor to floor, but didn't buy much at all. Rich was working that day, so we made a stop and said "Hi" to him at his store. For tea, we went to Honolulu Cafe. But it was a dismal tea time because they had run out of all their signature white beancurd tart. The chef must have gotten the inspiration from jizzing on a regular egg tart.



We had always wanted to give Big Singh Chapati at SS15 a try. The menu really baffled us, didn't know how to order. For the uninitiated, don't expect things to be like a mamak shop. Every thing that you take for granted is ala carte. If you want dhal, order dhal. If you want curry, order curry. We weren't very impressed with the food.
