Kursus Pra-Umrah

With less than a month to go, the travel agency finally arranged a briefing for mum and I's upcoming pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It was held at Griffon House, Assumption Church, an area with a perpetual parking deficit due to the close proximity to the hospital. I parked right at the bus stop on Jalan Gasing and was lucky enough not to be fined. Guide books, travel advisories, travel insurance cards, travel adapters, and tags were distributed to each participants. Our spiritual director, Father L was also there. The briefing wasn't really very informational but it was more of a session to ensure that everyone was aware of the departure schedule and turn up at the correct airport. Thankfully, I ain't the youngest person on the trip (second youngest la).

The briefing lasted a little over an hour, and right after that we went hunting for lunch. Thought of going to Ban Huat Cheng, Happy Mansion to try the famous chicken rice there, but it was closed. Brought mum to K. Intan for dumplings, but only wantans were left. We shared one plate. Back at Happy Mansion, we managed to get a table at Kwong Wah (still had stomach capacity for more food). The small shop was chock-full of customers lining up for cendol and asam laksa.

Her passion made me copy her order of cendol and asam laksa, but I added a packet of angku. I invited the old lady to share our table. She looked to be 70, but was pretty hale and independent. She told us that she's from Penang and have several kids living in KL. She drove over from Bandar Utama all by herself to eat at Kwong Wah. After tasting the cendol, I could understand the pull factor. The santan is super thick and the palm sugar really fragrant. It's topped with a generous dollop of soft red beans, and thick cendol. As it melts, the consistency is like melted ice cream! Beats Teochew Chendul hands down. And the mini bowl of asam laksa is pretty good too in terms of taste. But if you're a purist, it really lacks all the traditional garnishing. The angku also passed the standard tests for taste, skin texture, and filling.

In the evening, MaisonSK hosted dinner after a long hiatus. SK and CK prepared a meal of dumplings, grilled pork ribs with osmanthus honey sauce, blanched pork with spicy bean paste, and sambal asparagus with seafood. A sinful meal to mark the end of Saturday.

Best chendol ever! Incidentally, was it a slightly salty? I suspect they used salted caramel.
