The Soul of Ipoh
Qing Ming is coming soon, and here I am blogging about last year's Catholic Qing Ming. True to our routine, the first thing we did in Teluk Intan was to have breakfast at Pusat Penjaja Maharani. Nothing like a plate of yellow glutinous rice topped with charsiew, accompanied by a cup of kopi o. Even added on some fried crullers. Yummy! Also bought some of my dad's favourite foods to be offered at the grave, for example the famous Liew Kee CCF.
Flowers were bought at the nearby wet market. My sister let Little Monster to decide on the flowers. At the grave, we did some cleaning up before putting an array of food and fruits on the grave. The finishing touches were the flowers, candles, and incense. Then we all prayed the rosary, and poured tea for dad. And like past years, we went around lighting incense and saying some prayers for some of dad's neighbours.
St. Anthony's Church was undergoing major renovations after managing to raise enough funds to upgrade their facilities.
And it goes without saying that we made a stop at Sin Joo Heong to buy the famous heong peng. I have come to realize that I should just start buying the biscuit without the caramel filling. Years of shopping there had let us accumulate enough loyalty points to redeem a golf umbrella. Yippee. And we were quite surprised that they make a wicked kaya puff. Thumbs up for their
new product.
In a break from our usual routine, we headed to Ipoh for a JJCM trip. Since was an ad hoc decision, our primary guide was Google Maps. Parked in town, and headed to Restoran Thean Chun, a heritage coffee shop near Kong Heng Square. Very touristy, hence it was difficult to find a table. The shredded chicken hor fun over there is the real deal with concentrated prawn oil and smooth hor fun. Worth the wait. The kopitiam also serves caramel custard, but I ain't a fan. A word of warning-- do not eat the curry noodles there. Just don't. Right in front of the shop is Cendol Abang Kacak, sold from a motorcycle by M. Kelvinraj, a young Indian hunk with big arms. BIL ordered a bowl with durian. Other than that, there's also pork satay. Not a must-eat.
Right opposite the road from Thean Chun is Concubine Lane. Nothing much there except for some bad murals, and plenty of stalls selling snacks and souvenirs. Think ice cream, bubble tea, and weird stuff like rainbow cheese toast. However, I heard that Restoran Wong Koh Kee serves wicked Chinese dishes. Will try that next time. Walked around a bit more, but it was getting really hot. Cut it short, grabbed some Aun Kheng Lim salted chicken and headed home.
