Mana Batik?

It was Chester's off day and the little tyke was thoughtful enough to visit 'lil old me for lunch near my workplace. I brought him to Ka Fei Dian, but it was a disaster. Their nasi lemak sucks now. Sigh. Where's the fragrant sambal? Where's the generous portions? Ish. Anyway, after lunch, I showed him the building where I slog away each day and brought him jalan-jalan at Central Market after coffee at my favourite haunt, Old Town Kopitiam. Felt like a tourist guide. Actually walked around the whole place (didn't do it though I've been there for months and months). Later we found out that there was a batik expo at The Annexe, so up we went. Quite a sad affair, we were the only visitors at the time. Just us and a volunteer.

An installation project pushing the boundaries and limitations of Batik. A challenge beyond pre-conceived notions to create daring, exploratory artworks. A statement, interpretation and expression of Batik, its history, its processes, its story, its evolution.

Five rooms. Five installations. The first we saw was "Lahir" by Samsuddin Abu Bakar and Karya Labs. Lotsa cloth hangings. Eerie UV light. A dodoi sarong with a pillow in it. A slowly rotating foetus projected on it. Seram. Next was Masrina Abdullah and Caecar Cheng's installation features a rotating cone of batik where one can lie down and view it. I came away dizzy for batik! "Rivers" by Khalid Samsuddin and Melinda Looi was basically a fashio piece that kinda flowed out as a "river". Complete with sound effects. Didn't like it. Kumpulan Pelajar UITM was obviously still on an Angkasawan high with their installation "Angan-angan Mat Jenin". Astronouts hanging from the ceiling with batik patchwork on their suits. Nizam Ambia and Kamil Yunus (the volunteer introduced him as Malaysia's foremost graphic designer, and I was like, "Huh?") had an interesting installation entitled "Batik R Us". Interactive in a sense that they created several cut-outs. Pick out a description that best reflects your views on batik, hang it there, put your face through it and snap a pic! Take it home with you. Ingenious.

I picked out the word Glamorous. Hehe.
