Going for Gold

50th Balloons

Knowing a person for 50 years is a long time. Being married to that person for 50 years is an even LONGER time. Well, I was witness to that recently at Uncle Peter and Auntie Anna's 50th Wedding Anniversary. It really is quite rare with people marrying late, dying early and divorce being as common as a credit card balance transfer. As Niel so succintly put it:

"Does that even exist anymore?!"

Well, I guess Uncle Peter and Auntie Anna are one of the remnants of a passing age. All their children and grandchildren got together (from overseas and outstation) to throw their pre-octogenarian parents a bash they won't forgot. It was complete with a renewal of vows at the church and a lavish dinner at Hee Lai Ton, Bandar Puchong Jaya. Plenty of friends turned up and there was a carnival-like atmosphere with gold and white balloon ornaments (emblazoned with the "50th Wedding Anniversary", no less) decking the church aisles and the restaurant. During the renewal of vows, Uncle Peter stuttered like an anxious groom (but this time round, it was due to not having his reading glasses).

The dinner was great with above-average food in terms of portion and taste. Can you believe that it was the first time I tasted roasted suckling pig? It was so sinfully delicious. The skin... the skin... I know, pity the little pig...... but... the skin..... the skin. We actually bungkus 3 suckling pig heads and it was subsequently cooked in the famous spicy and sour dish of Vegetable Feet. Uncle Peter disclosed his secret of marital bliss:

"A whole lotta patience"

Patience is a difficult thing to define. We all have different tolerance levels and some people even question the need to tolerate someone. Don't stay together just for sake of staying together. But realistically, we're bound to rub each other the wrong way one time or another. However, If we can't even put in a little patience, everthing is bound to be a disaster.

50 years with someone? 50 years...
