Aidil-FIT-ri

Image
I went hiking on Raya Pertama . Yes, I did. Please don't faint or laugh hysterically. I did not go nuts. My mind wasn't taken over by aliens. KH, SK and I actually went to Wawasan Hill to hike. Wawasan Hill is part of the Air Itam Forest Reserve just beside Taman Wawasan. It's so close to the housing area that while hiking, one can still hear the traffic and the Aidilfitri prayers. We started at a little before 9:00 AM. At first, we went the wrong way. Followed a big group to a steep climb that went past a small Taoist shrine. Actually, that wasn't the main trail, but a side trail heading towards a waterfall. It got increasingly more difficult and SK seemed to be struggling, especially since she was wearing Birkenstocks instead of trail shoes. Didn't want an untoward incident, so we decided to head back out. That 25 minute detour KO-ed SK. She decided to wait outside, while KH and I headed to the main trail. The start of the trail was rocky, a trail carved ou

Naughty Boys at Naughty Nuri's

Image
What better way to celebrate Raya Puasa than to have a naughty dinner on its eve? Made our way to Life Center to try Naughty Nuri's , a Balinese grill joint famous for all things porcine and alcoholic ( check out all the pig statues around the restaurant ). Been a quite some time since both of us actually went out for a nice evening out, to eat, drink and chat. We had a window table with a view of my client's building across the street. Not sure how that affected my appetite. LOL. To begin we ordered two beers. For mains, it was the 1995 Signature Barbeque Spare Ribs and Sukawati Inspired Crispy Duck. The slab of spare ribs was easy to eat with a great sauce. However, the duck was a bit over-fried in my opinion. But I loved the the onion rice that was on the side. As much as I like spare ribs and duck, It was actually a lot of meat for two persons to finish. Took us a while. It gave us the opportunity for more quiet conversation which was good. With so much meat and be

Second Three

Image
Planned to watch "Three" with mum and SK on Sunday but it took me quite a while to find a suitable cinema. All the GSC cinemas in Petaling Jaya had screening times close to 4:00 PM which was too late. In the end, I chose to buy tickets at IOI City Mall which is 30 KM from church. IOI City Mall was full of shoppers. Never had I seen the walkways so full of people. Some eateries were at full capacity although it was the fasting month. Lunch was a quick affair at Sakae Sushi . Quickly ate and left the fishy smelling restaurant. "Three" wasn't what I expected. Can't help but feel cheated by the trailer. The whole plot never leaves the hospital where the three main protagonists interact-- Louis Khoo who plays a stressed police inspector, Zhao Wei who plays a stressed neurosurgeon and Wallace Chung who plays the part of the intelligent and sociopathic criminal. The story starts out pretty slow but things speed up towards the end. They even threw in a Quick

Three Cups of Coffee

Been a while since mum and I venture to Taman Naga Emas to eat the 'crystal' pan mee there. 'Crystal' means that each piece of noodle dough is individually kneaded in clear water, giving it a smooth texture and a flour-free taste. A young family seated at the table adjacent to us also ordered the same thing. I was quite surprised by their huge appetite. Mummy: Boy, eat this pork floss bun first, the pan mee takes a while. (Daddy was also munching on a pork floss bun of his own) Daddy: Oh, here comes the pan mee! Three bowls of pan mee came and their kid was barely six years old I think. Amazing. Can't believe that the kopi c there only costs MYR1. After breakfast, mum went to Tai Onn Tong at Happy Garden for her TCM consultation. It was a long wait, so KH actually came over to have a flat white with me at Cappuccino Garden Cafe which was just a few doors away. They also have curry noodles, but I don't think it's worth the money. The Fren

Warehouse & Water

Image
For the first time ever, mum and I went to the DKSH warehouse sale at Parklane Commercial Hub, Kelana Jaya. Great that they decided to provide free parking for the duration of the event. It was already the last day, so most of the good stuff had already been carted off. Nothing much caught our eye and we were eager to leave because it was sweltering. As we were walking to the car, I spotted Beans Depot and decided to give it a try. Shared an affogato with mum to cool off. Got some freebies too-- they wrap coffee grind in used coffee filters then tie it up with string. Supposed to work as an odour eater. Went to Paradigm Mall for some window shopping after that. As expected, the Hari Raya decorations centered on a kampung house. In the evening, went over to MaisonSK for dinner. The Tribe was there earlier to have a dip in the pool. Little Monster was so clingy and refused to put his head in the water. Hurray, my last post for June. :P.

Juadah June

Image
Another quick update since I wanna breeze through June! Dry food. Assorted dried food stuff and herbs at the morning market. Fin food. Say "No" to sharks fin? Spiritual food. The lightest gold ingots in the world. Spicy food. Once in a while we want a riot in our mouth. Bland food. I like it actually, unlike some people who treat it like food for the sick. Crispy food. That's actually battered mantis prawns, not banana fritters. Fun food. Nyonya kuih for a BEC gathering that evening.

Happiness is... ... making your own popiah  and munching it down with family and friends. Then drinking a how bowl of bubur chacha for dessert.

Celebrating QueerRanter-D

Image
It was QueerRanter-D's birthday so a dinner party was arranged at Osteria RealBlue , Solaris Dutamas. As with all shops at Solaris Dutamas, they are a challenge to locate. It was just a small affair with my mum, SK, KH and Apollo, and Apollo's mum. KT was supposed to come, but an emergency at home held her back. Bruschetta with tomatoes and balsamic vinegar. Wanted the Burata, but ended up with Caprese Salad instead. Smoked salmon with artichoke cream. A cold and refreshing dish. Ravioli with Porcini mushrooms. Seafood ravioli with saffron sauce. This is a very delicious Mat Salleh seafood sui kao ! I'm not a fan of carbonara, but this dry-ish version really changes my mind about cream-based pastas. The birthday boy had his cake at Coffee Stain .

Market and Swim

Image
Gosh. Nothing to say about a mundane Saturday in June. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking. Went to the market as usual. Took this photo from the multi-level car park that overlooks the playground. The vegetable sellers and food stall owners take over some of the space to do business. I love soup noodles in the morning, especially from the stall that operates from a small lane in the OUG morning market. Whenever I want a little more kick, I order some curry chicken feet. That weird looking thing is Ika Meshi which is squid stuffed with sticky rice. Bought that in Hakodate during my recent trip to Hokkaido. The reddish dish is red wine residual chicken, a Foochow dish. Mum and I love it. Been ages since my last visit to the pool. Kinda lost my stamina. Broke in a new pair of swim trunks that I bought online. The camo prints are interesting, no?

Who IsMe?

Image
There's this shop at Empire Shopping Gallery that doesn't know what it wants too be. In its window showcase, you see skin care products. The brand of the skin care products do not match the signboard-- IsMe . To add to the confusion, it has a F&B counter on one side, opposite a beauty counter. For several months now I have noticed its lack of customers. I think people who just want to sit down for a cup of coffee and cake are worried that they might get an earful of beauty consultations, so its much safer to go elsewhere. With some trepidation, we walked into the so-called beauty cafe and looked at the menu. Since we were the only customers, service was excellent. SK demanded that I order the signature coffee because it came with a cute bear face. According to the service crew, their Red Velvet cake uses beetroot instead of food colouring so we gave that a try. It was delicious and so was the matcha-passionfruit mille crepe. Other than coffee, they also serve flower teas
