Stories of Growing Up Gay in KL

Image
Unlike myself, KH is quite casual about his sexuality in the workplace. He often tells me his coming out stories to random colleagues. And he has several sisters at the office. Just the other day, he introduced me to CP over lunch at Baba Nyonya by Sambal Chilli , Avenue K. The restaurant replaces Swensen's which was never popular at that location. We ordered some dishes-- Kapitan curry chicken, omelette, and sambal okra. Taste-wise it was quite good, but the price is a little on the high side for the portion that we got. Anyway, the star of the lunch was his colleague, not the food. He had plenty of stories to tell. An insight into the younger generation of gays. Good to hear that while he was in school, homosexuality wasn't an issue at all. The straight boys weren't threatened at all and seemed to love indulging in some sexual ambiguity as well. Perhaps, this is only true in the big cities. Such an interesting childhood he had with much relationship drama and sexual e...

Little Hobbits

Image
It's that time of the year again when the monsters spend more time with mum and I because my sister would be busy making calendars for the coming year. That Sunday, Little Monster followed us to church while his brother was at Science class. Such arrangements are usually better because without their partner in crime they much calmer. When Little Monster got fidgety, mum just pop a Fererro Rocher into his mouth. One mass, four chocolates. Yikes. Once we were done, we had to go pick the big one up from Sri Petaling. We reached there at 1:00 PM, but he wasn't done till 2:00 PM. Really a horrible time slot. Neither here nor there. Little Monster fell asleep in the car, else he would be wailing for lunch. Just waited in the car. With all that free time, I scoured Foursquare for a place to lunch. The Shotlist was pretty close where we were, but I decided to be a fan boy and go for The Shire Cafe instead. As you can guess from the name, the place has an LOTR-esque theme to it. ...

Yellow Owls

Image
Mum and I did not attend BERSIH 5.0 , we went to the market instead. Sporadic sightings of yellow at the market, but nothing significant. Nothing much happened especially with KH away at Port Dickson for a company event. Did my usual Saturday chores and had a red wine mee suah lunch. On a whim, I hit up an ex-colleague of mine for an afternoon cafe session. The interesting thing about this ex-colleague was that he came out to me some months ago. We had been trying to arrange a double date but it wasn't easy. KH always had some run or hike, and he was flying back and forth between KL and BKK for work. I decided to screw the logistics and just meet up. Thought of trying New Chapter by Owl Cafe thinking that it wasn't as crazy as the main branch at Jalil Link. It was naive of me to think so. Although New Chapter has a floor space thrice the size of its mother branch, it was just as packed. Lol. When I arrived at Calvary Convention Center, there were five groups waiting ...

Interview

Image
Thirteen years at the same company-- not many people can do that. You can say that I am a super loyal employee. In those 13 years I had been involved in three different subsidiaries but all in the same group of course. In my current position, I'm kinda left high and dry. All the middle managers had left and the original director who seconded us over has also since jumped ship. All because of one person. A megalomaniac who behaves like a God King in the company. After a major exodus of employees from a combination of transfers and resignations, he even blocked future attempts for internal transfer. A real vindictive bully. Long story short, I am now looking to leave. From time to time, my ex-boss hands me some job opportunities from his contacts. The first two didn't work out. On the third try, I got a call from HR and an interview was arranged! Goodness, my first interview in 13 years. And my first interview wasn't even really an interview at all because all that I was as...

Jolly with Jasonino

Did my usual Sunday routine of church and Paradigm Mall-ing. Christmas decorations weren't up yet in the mall, but the retail shops are already displaying their Christmas wares. Lunch was at Phostreet , a new kid on the block. Felt some trepidation because it wasn't that long from my Viet Vomit episode at Lucky Quan. Hehe. Anyway, I was delighted that they serve pork. Tried their mixed beef pho and a pork chop rice. Must say that the portions don't quite hold up well to the pictures in the menu. Decent taste. But I must say that the sauces were very spicy. Mum and I directly went hunting for cendol to douse the fire in our mouths. In case you didn't know, Teochew Chendul has durian, chempedak, and white coffee varieties for their cendol now. KH and I had received an invitation to Jasonino's housewarming later that evening. His new place was located in Kajang, in an area that I had never visited before. Took us about an hour to get there. For some reason, I ne...

Mid-November Quickie

Image
How times have changed... al fresco kopitiam breakfast of salmon sashimi with kopi . A normal scene at OUG morning market. Call me an old fart, but I prefer thick curry noodles for breakfast! An old man looking for a gift for his grandchildren. He must be so confused by all the Disney princesses. Nothing beats a home-cooked lunch by your mum. Red wine residual chicken is something that mum and I really like to eat.

Day Off Paktor

Image
Another Friday, another day off for paktor with KH. Started the morning at League of Captains , The Row. Many years, that stretch along Jalan Doraisamy was known as the Asian Heritage Row, but it has been reborn. Things look different there with extensive renovations. Pestle and Mortar is behind the cafe with such an eye-catching name. The interior doubles as a mini showcase for its products. Took advantage of the B1F1 coffee offer, and ate a packet of super spicy nasi lemak and a sandwich from Tommy Le Baker. They don't do proper mains, all pre-packed. Out of a whim, we messaged Sharky that we were at the cafe and in under fifteen minutes, he turned up! Coincidentally, he was at work for some computer game tournament. His next shift didn't begin in a hour so he joined us for breakfast. Next on our schedule was a full body massage at Healthland , Renaissance Hotel. Quite a challenge to book a slot for this place, but it's worth it. For some unknown reason, we were g...
