Short Hops

Mum suddenly felt sick on Sunday, so I sent her to the GP at Taman Damai Utama. A very old style clinic that was originally from Pudu. While waiting for the medicine to be dispensed, a renovator rushed in with three Indian nationals. One had to be carried in because he was bleeding from his abdomen. Some electrical drill accident it seems. Yikes! The doctor took a look and sent him off to the A&E after giving him some bandages to slow down the bleeding. Is it a waste of time to go to the clinic in emergencies since you would most probably be turned away? In the afternoon, had lunch at Sushi Zanmai . Coffee at Hide & Sēēk Cafe after that with KH and SK. Thought it would be an alternative to our usual haunt. Should have went to Piccolo Cafe instead as they only serve black coffee. More of a tea place. Not satisfying at all. However, we did go to Piccolo Cafe after dinner... for a spot of latte and red velvet cake. Bliss.

CNY Zombies

Image
The morning market had mellowed down with CNY at its tail end. Qing Ming had even started appearing on the shelves. And best of all, Jaguar Lim's ( self-professed future world star ) movie "Zombies vs the Lucky Exorcist" had a publicity stunt at the market. Too bad I missed seeing Chinese 'vampires' jumping in front of kopitiam s. The business owners must be thrilled to have such an auspicious thing happen. In case you don't know, Jaguar Lim is the boss of Country Tid Bits & Candies Conttage. Back when you were a student, you might have loitered at his shop in Midvalley Megamall or the Genting Skyway base station, eating free samples of preserved fruit to your heart's delight. Brought mum out to Midvalley Megamall after finishing our morning chores. Ate at Nichinan Jidoriya , a relatively new establishment there. They had a pretty good set for two. Only MYR68++ for salmon sashimi , gyoza , shabi-shabu , volcano roll, chicken teppanyaki , sal...

Paktor Petaling St.

Image
My sister was still ironing out stuff at her home after the break-in, so we offloaded the kids from her hands and brought them to church. Quite stumped when it came to lunch. Simply stopped at a new restaurant near KH's place called Restoran Lian Hin . Typical kopitiam fare at slightly more jacked up prices. Halfway through lunch, Little Monster actually fell asleep. Sent them home after that while mum and I made preparations to go out to Gospel Hall KL. Mum was helping out at the Petaling Street Lunar New Year Festival ( a project championed by Chong Keat Aun and Co., defenders of Jalan Petaling ). KH also tagged along ( muacks! ). Arrived there at about 5:00 PM and helped out to set up the stall. Settled that in forty minutes. Left the aunties to the other logistics while KH and I went to paktor at Einstein Cafe , one of those hipster-vegan joints. A woody interior fused with random art with a high retro feel to it as they had maintained some of the original features. I...

The Year of the Lamb Burglar

Image
At the end of February, I was the designated driver to mum's charity event at SJK(C) Chung Kwo. Exactly one year ago, I went to the same school on a wild goose chase . Once bitten, twice shy. This year, I got there with no fuss and even found a good parking spot. The organiser had given the Spring Single Mothers Association one table, so I was there to fill the space. Every year, this Christian association organizes a huge charity lunch for the needy. There were goodie bags at each table and an 8-course lunch by Restaurant Sheng Hui , a caterer from Sekinchan. Loads of performances ranging from song and dance to a testimony from an ex-paralympian. The emcee was Lim Ching Miau, the controversial plus-sized actress from two of Teresa Kok's "Onederful Malaysia" parodies. You would remember her as "Mrs. Jit". Currently she is promoting her movie "Kung Fu Taboo". As luck would have it, my dinner was also by Restaurant Sheng Hui . Mum and I were at...

2015CNY4-7: Rush Back to Singapore

Image
Since mum and I didn't attend Ash Wednesday mass, we got our ashes on the fourth day of CNY. Almost everyone was dressed up ( those left in KL ) and it was still kinda contrasting to be in your CNY new clothes and your forehead marked with ashes. Had lunch with The Tribe at Capital Nasi Dagang , Damansara Uptown with The Tribe. Although a 100% milik Ultra-Kiasu restaurant, it was good that they were open in the CNY season. When my nasi dagang was served, I couldn't concentrate on eating cause I had to settle the movie ticket purchase for after-lunch entertainment. By the time I was done, I found that I had less than one hour to eat and drive to IOI Mall! And I even took a wrong turn while getting there. Fuh! Still, we were in time to watch "From Vegas to Macau II" . Compared to the movie we watched on CNY I, this was MUCH MORE worth the money. Funny with Chow Yun-Fatt and plenty of explosions. LOL. Even the kids were entertained. In the evening, we had a big ...

2015CNY3: What's Two Minus One?

On the third day ( He rose again ), I made a visit to my tenant. The Nepalese was moving out, leaving the Korean. She greeted me at the door. And when I was gonna take off my slippers, she stopped me. Turns out that they wear footwear IN THE HOUSE. Good Lord. And as I glanced at the entrance grill, I found it to be covered by a thick layer of dust. If one was to carbon date it, no doubt it would prove that my tenants didn't do any cleaning for a year! A pair of dust bunnies! Took a brief look around to make sure that the home appliances were in good working order and returned the deposit to her. Chatted with her a while and she revealed that she would be going to the US for work. Wish her all the best and I hope that will at least pick up the habit to dust while she's in New York. Back home, mum was busy cooking lunch as The Tribe came over ( as did SK, her granny and Apollo's mum ). One of the more creative dishes was mum's pineapple prawns that came served in a pine...

2015CNY2: Visiting the Pyramid

Image
Nothing much went on the second day. In the morning, went through mum's old, black and white photos. One of these days, I shall embark on a project to digitize all of them. Back in those days, people loved to take photographs and develop them, exchanging copies with family and friends. I'm sure it wasn't exactly cheap back then but they did it anyway. Truth be told, back in those days, they took such artistic photos and without the help of digital cameras. Ate lunch at home after doing some house chores. Later in the afternoon, ventured out to Sunway Pyramid with mum and bro. The management decided to use a yarn-tangled sheep farm as the theme of their CNY decorations. Not your run-of-the-mill sheep, but Technicolor sheep. Paired with the AstroTurf, it felt a little bit like Teletubbies. And the yarn webbing made it look like Shelob was about to spring down from the rotunda. Haha. Made a short stop at Hui Lau Shan after shopping ( mum bought four plush lambs from thr...
