Dr. Ika?

Image
Got a frantic call from SK on Friday night telling me that Apollo's mum cut her finger on her car door. Huh? Car door? What's sharp about that? According to her, the cut was quite bad and the bleeding didn't stop. She wanted to know whether the Klinik Alam Medic near my place is a 24 hour clinic. Half an hour later, she called me again. The doctor referred her to Hospital Serdang! Funny thing was, the locum doctor was writing her a referral letter. Kalau dah nak pergi Jabatan Kecemasan pun nak referral letter ke? SK had just touched down from Vietnam that evening and was quite exhausted. So she requested me to drive them to the hospital. During the drive there, I questioned her regarding the injury and the visit to the clinic. Turns out that Apollo's mum slammed her the car door on her finger. And the impact made her skin split and finger turn swollen. Now that made more sense. And the locum doctor gave many excuses not to give her stitches, saying that he was uns

Prevention When There Is No Cure

Image
Drink It Up , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. On Friday night, mum and SK had an appointment with a preventive pain specialist from Kuching. The whole thing was arranged via his brother, a general practitioner in our neighbourhood. Eight patients were there to see him that night. Waited for quite some time. I had dinner in the car and later went to nearby RQ Tea to get some drinks. Clumsy as ever, SK dropped her drink and the cup split at the side. An amazing new way to enjoy her 3Q passionfruit tea. LOL. The specialist looked very much like his brother but with a demeanour that was more rushed and jittery. Also noticed that he liked to lick his lips and that his tongue was kinda sharp. Thank goodness my mum didn't present him with much of a case, just the normal degradation that old people experience. Nothing much to do about that. SK on the other hand had medical conditions that were right up his alley. And he immediately handed her his card and asked her if she has medical

Good Arch, Good Business

fresh foot stain , swiped from azmirahrouge on Flickr. Recently, mum bought a pair of GoodArch shows for a whopping sum of MYR2,980! She didn't even go to the shop. The saleswoman just did it on the side at the neigbourhood mini market. Amazing. At least another three aunties bought it. Basically they are orthotic shoes. Just by stepping on a special inkpad, they manage to get the contour of your foot. And based on that, they manufacture customized insoles for you. On Saturday, I fetched mum and a neighbour to their HQ in Seri Petaling. The initial directions I was given was that the place faced a housing area and was nearby the night market. Great. That's about anywhere in Seri Petaling. Anyway, I managed to get better directions after calling the PIC. The place was large. Three shoplots combined. And it was crawling with customers ( old and young alike ). Every ten minutes, the doorbell would ring. And the place was very 'Chinese', rightly so since the product is mad

Heng Hua , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. SK had been feeling under weather. She had a rojak of symptoms-- flu, sore throat, wheezing and lethargy. OTC medications didn't do much for her. After a week of wheezing, I cautioned her to see an ENT specialist lest we see a repeat of what happened in February . On Thursday morning, she felt really bad and couldn't get out of bed. She called in sick and later drove to Taman Desa Medical Centre to see the doctor. This time, they caught the upper respirarory tract infection early, but she still needed to be warded. Nebulizer twice daily and antibiotic injections thrice daily. Later that night, I visited her at the hospital. Her air passages had cleared but she was clearly tired. The next day after work, I fetched her from the hospital with KH in tow. Had dinner with her at a new restaurant opposite TDMC-- Hoi Kee Heng Hua . Apparently, they're an old shop from Brickfields, but I never heard of them. Ate their House Style Ste

Wu My Cholesterol Away

Breakfast , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. Sis had to OT again, so mum also OT-ed. No market meant more sleep for me. Sent mum to my sister's house and I proceeded to OUG to collect my long overdue lipid profile results. An old doctor consulted. Looked like a septuagenarian. He looked at the piece of paper from Gribbles and declared that I really should start taking cholesterol medication, but it was up to me. Comparing the results to my past test nearly one year ago, my total cholesterol had been reduced from 6.77 to 5.70. Although that's a reduction, I'm still above the boundary of 5.20. Bad cholesterol was still high, but lower and the most surprising thing was the fact that my good cholesterol had dropped! And I was taking high-Omega 6 fish oil supplements. Looks like my oats didn't discriminate between the bad and the good. :(. The only other good news was my triglycerides level. In my opinion, there's progress and I'm hope that continued adjustment to

Spinal Tap IV: Discharged

Image
... , swiped from Leigh Righton on Flickr. The ten days in KPJ Damansara were not pretty for SK. Bad wardmate - the Indian woman watched Bollywood day and night at full blast and talked on the phone loudly. SK paid an extra MYR80 a night and upgraded herself to the single room. Food was crappy and the portion was pathetic - tofu in porridge :( Spinal leakage - her procedure had caused a leakage in her spinal membrane, so the pressure in her skull dropped, causing her brain to sag. And that caused a host of problems ranging from severe headaches, nausea and weird sensory perception. The whole time, she could not sit up or stand for long. On Saturday morning, mum and I brought her breakfast and packed off most of her luggage because she was gonna be discharged later in the afternoon. After lunch, Lifebook came to pick her up and send her home. True to the usual sui -ness, Prudential's system was down and she could not settle her insurance claim. But she paid a deposit and left anywa

Spinal Tap III

Silent Scream , swiped from Charlie Barker ♥ on Flickr. On and off along the week, Briyani Blue Sky and I would visit SK at the hospital. Luckily Briyani stayed close to the hospital, so he would normally pack her dinner after work. One day as I was walking from Bukit Jalil station to the car park to get my car, I received a distress call from SK. It was a whole lot of screaming and yelling and yelps of pain! Kinda like childbirth! Yikes! Confirming that she had already called the nurse, I quickly drove over to Damansara Kim in the rain. Halfway there, she informed me that she had stopped shivering and cramping after the nurse gave her an injection. Phew! By the time I had arrived, Briyani was already there, sporting his.. ahem... pai kia haircut. Completely shave both sides, leaving an unruly mop top above. :P. Definitely an attention-getter at his brother's wedding. Asked the nurse what happened and she explained that she ran a high fever of 39 degrees ( ! ) so the doctor presc

Spinal Tap II

Drip , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. On Saturday, mum and I went for breakfast at Restoran Fei Wang and tapau -ed curry noodles ( she was never known as one to jaga makan ) for SK. Bumped into my sister, so we ate together. Reached the hospital at about 10:00am. SK's headache seemed to have gotten worse and had to lie down all the time. Trips to the loo would give her a killer headache. She ate just a little bit of the noodles. Amazingly, her ex-company sent flowers and fruits in a beautiful basket. Before noon, we left her to rest and mum went home to fry some battered sandwiches of new year cakes with sweet potato and yam. Yummy! For lunch, we ate leftover curry noodles and some of the yummy snacks. In the afternoon, mum went out for her society meeting. I just stayed at home fiddling on my laptop. Mum came home at about 5:00pm and she told me that a check on the EC's website found that she was still registered to vote in Kuantan. She had updated her IC address ages ago

Spinal Tap I

Dr. Azizi , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. Note: This happened four weeks ago today! SK was scheduled to undergo a nucleoplasty on Thursday morning, so she checked herself into KPJ Damansara on Wednesday. Unfortunately for her, nobody checked out on that day leaving her stranded there for hours. Reaching her limit, she unleashed her bitchiness and got checked into a twin sharing room. Later that night, I took the PUTRA line down to the Kelana Jaya station. Subsequently, I hailed a cab to Damansara Kim. The taxi driver was a sixty year old Teo Chew Lang who told me of his perfect vision. He thought I was a doctor. I told him that if I was a doctor, I wouldn't be hailing a cab. Due to the scarcity of rooms, Sk's room was at the pediatric ward. Plenty of kids running around and their worried parents doting on them. As usual, SK story me all the peningness that happened during the day. I also found out that her doctor would do a disectomy if her condition was found to

Suddenly Warded

Image
O2 , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. Note: A late post... Not related to SK's current hospitalization :S SK had been coughing and coughing and coughing and wheezing for a week plus without respite. Since the GP couldn't do anything for her, the next logical step would be to visit the specialist. The diagnosis-- bronchitis. According to the doctor, with her breathlessness and if she was any older, she would most probably had collapsed way earlier. They hooked her up on oxygen and steroids. And yeah, she was immediately warded. After I came back from the office, I took a cab to Taman Desa Medical Center. Waltzed in with a packet of vegetarian tomyum noodles as she was not thrilled with the hospital food. The staff were extra nice. Fake smiles all over the place. Felt a bit weird. Must be some new management directive. And I guess they can afford to be nice when there was only eighteen patients at that time. Hardly over-worked. Took her car and went back to her apartment to pac

When You Orsi Too Much You Have To Take ORS

Last Sunday morning, I woke up at 7:00am with a dull ache in my tummy. The pain prompted me to slip out of my Spongebon Squarepants trunks and sit on the porcelain throne. As expected, it was the runs. Didn't quite feel better after that first purge, but I went back to bed anyway. An hour later, I was awakened by the pain again. Went another round and this time I could distinctively feel some cramping in my abdominal region. Normally I would feel better after expelling the toxins, but this time, it was different. Even a generous rub of RuYi oil did not help. At about 9:00pm, I told my mum that I wasn't up for church. She suggested I see the doctor. So I pulled up a pair nylon shorts and went with my under shirt on. By that time, I was already nauseous. The doctor was a typical young, nerdy fellow with a karipap hairstyle. When he wanted to take my temperature, he said, "Sorry". Same when he asked me to pull up my shirt, he said, "Sorry". When he asked me

Raped!

She asked me to relax. Was told that I would feel some pain. She poked me. It wasn't bad. Stopped a while. And moved around a bit. She asked me to change positions. The angle was wrong it seemed. My poor hands. The doctor was only able to draw blood from my left hand. Hi guys and gals, this is a follow-up post from my cholesterol shocker the other day. Was very touched that many people were concerned with my health. I did go to see a GP to get some advice on the situation. As expected, the doctor did not trust the results from the pharmacy and ordered for another test. In two days, the nurse called and asked me to see the doctor again. It was confirmed, I have high cholesterol levels. The total cholesterol was a bit lower, but the LDL was still at an ugly level. I was given a piece of paper from the American Heart Association detailing the cholesterol levels of common foods items. And she told me to exercise and come back for check-up in three months. That was

Cholesterol Is Thicker Than Water

Image
Desktop Blood Test , swiped from juhansonin on Flickr. In 2010, I did a yearly blood test at Pathlab and found that my total cholesterol had shot up from borderline high to 7.00 MMOL/L. The recommended range is for it to be lower than 5.20! From then on, I started taking rolled oats every morning and even tried plant sterols that supposedly compete with cholesterol absorption in the bloodstream. I was already very conscious about my diet ( no chicken skin and lard ) and mum never did believe in fried and oily foods. So, during my morning marketing, I took a simple test at the pharmacy. The results from the handheld device didn't show any improvement. According to it, my LDL had shot up to 5.15 from 4.80! The only good news was that my HDL was slightly higher at 1.56 and my triglycerides dropped from 1.40 to 0.75. The Total Cholesterol / HDL ratio was also slightly better at 4.50. KH consoled me by saying that at least things did not get worse. But truthfully, I expected to see

Beware of No. Eight

Image
For years and years I have been in a way the Chinese term as 八字腿 ( number eight leg ). Why? Cause when I walk my foot points outwards rather than straight ahead. The problem is more prominent on my right leg and I have recently decided to finally make a conscious effort to correct it. So far it had been pointed out by several people, namely my mum, Jase and KH. Even Psycho Ah Long says I walk funny. Likened me to Lat characters! WTF! Just after a few days of walking posture awareness, my leg has started to protest. At first, I experience pain below the knee, then a dull ache at my pelvis. Now, both sensations have gone only to be replaced by a slight tiredness in my right leg. I think it's starting to work. If you do see me walking incorrectly, do give me a gentle reminder. Thanks. :).

The Benefits of Swimming

Image
swimmer Swiped from hagerstenguy . I don't know about you, but I'm usually horny after my weekly swim. Kakaka. ( Jangan fikir bukan-bukan, no woody in my trunks le, but different case if KH's in the pool too, :P ). Increased blood flow? Sign of improved health? Release of feel good hormones? Or just plain horniness on my part? ( likely to be psychosomatic, :P ). Might be a combination of factors. Who knows? So, are you horny after exercise or gym?
