Surprising SkyHaus

Image
Some Sundays, I just make a random look on Google Maps to determine where mum and I should eat after Sunday mass. Found SkyHaus Café just behind my church, nestled within a residential area. Rare to see a café with a rating of 4.5. And the fact that it was a vegetarian joint didn't deter me from trying it. Business was good on a Sunday afternoon although the area was pretty dead. The café had plenty of natural light and tables were arranged around a central work area for the barista and cashier ( which happened to be all young boys ). Most of the food on the menu was western, but there were also a few Asian items. The waiter recommended the fettucine carbonara, and I chose the siphon signature coffee to go with it. The carbonara sauce was pretty thick, and the pasta had a great texture. Even the vegetarian ham looked like real meat. LOL. The coffee was also great, it suit my palette. Smooth, and none of the sourness that I dislike. If you're buddy buddy with the barista,

Otherwise

Image
Hidden in the SS4 residential area is a quaint place for coffee called Otherwise Cafe . It's neighbours are a Protestant church, a Buddhist society, and a design firm called Yipieyaya Studio. I suspect that it's related to the designers from next door. Don't expect a huge signboard, there's only a small logo out front. Just look out for a quaint looking place with vintage wooden chairs and lots of metal and rivets out front. I really wonder where the designers source for all the quaint stuff in there. Surprised to see a vintage diving helmet in the window display. The counter is made out of old railroad sleepers. Some of the chairs are the vintage folding chairs with red cushioning. The last I saw those was at Yan Keng Benevolent Dramatic Association in Petaling Street. At one corner, they have an old barber's chair with an antique gramophone and ship lanterns. If you like to sit cross-legged, you can also climb onto an antique metal bed frame that they transforme

Bless Then Dress

Out of the blue, Lifebook booked me for lunch after my Sunday mass. Why? Bless was in town! A short breather from his toils in Kulai, Johor. The little ones were with me, so we let them choose the lunch venue. They voted for Nando's . We shared an Everyone's Platter and I added on my free Peri-vilege chicken. Perfect. Next, we went for coffee at Starbucks as Coffee Bean didn't have a big table for us. Both of them had just returned from a holiday in Tokyo, so they passed me snacks and sex toys gifts. Bless was doing fine, except for the hand injury ( gym, gym, gym ) and work politics. Lifebook on the other hand has some family issues,  but nothing he can't handle. Little Monster was very cheeky that day, doing all sorts of funny antics for Bless. Good training for him since he's not as good with kids as Brian . By 2:00 PM, they were off as Bless had a flight to catch. We stayed at Paradigm Mall to take a look around. The theme for 2017 is "Train Ride to C

Babysitting Birthday

Image
Celebrated Cutiepie's birthday at Morganfield's, IOI City Mall on Prophet Muhammad's Birthday. Makes sense to celebrate a belated birthday on a birthday, right? She was supposed to ditch her kids, but her husband won out in the end. Doesn't matter since I brought mum and Little Monster as well. KH and SK also joined in. Arrived late because we were caught in an unexpected traffic snarl. Some smart ass decide to close 3 out of 2 lanes for resurfacing. When we saw Cutiepie, she was a little disheveled. She told us that we just missed a shouting match between her children that quickly spiraled into a wrestling bout at the center court. Gasp. We quickly got seated at Morganfield's , but the fighting didn't stop. Very spirited siblings. Her youngest daughter is really feisty and cute. Haha. We ordered some ribs, sausages, fried pork, and salad. Service at the restaurant was a little icky as I think the service staff don't have a good grasp of the English la

LZB

Image
When EspressoLab was still in Avenue K, I used to train my eyes behind the counter every time I walked by, going to and from the KLCC LRT station. Why? Because a leng zai barista ( nama manjanya LZB ) used to work there. With his height and broad shoulders, he looked so good girded with the work apron. Ever since it closed down, I lost my cuci mata opportunity in the early mornings and late evenings. However, my disappointed is now at an end, because I found him again! And just down the road from where I work at Jalan Yap Kwan Seng. If you're curious about how he looks ( no spy pics from me guys and girls! ), go check him out at Black Ink No. 6 . It's a perfectly quiet place for a poke bowl and a cup of coffee, while you check out LZB with his daily tasks. There's also a coffee called the Volcano, something that looks like a messy creampie. :P. I shall go back to try that.

A White Raya

Image
With mum on a strict no-carbs diet, Raya ain't what it used to be. Plus, we had no inclination to go to any government open houses, so we just spent it at a local mall. Statistically, Sunway Pyramid is one the malls that we often ignore although its quite near to my place. The horrendous traffic and parking are the key reasons. So with most KL-ites out of town for Raya, we made our way there. The roads were clear and we found parking in a jiffy. For the first day of Raya, everything seemed business-as-usual. Only a few shops were closed. And since it was our first visit after a long time, many of the shops were fresh in our eyes. In my opinion, the Raya decorations were lacklustre. The focal point was the frame of a Malay village house, all in white. Event the silhouettes of coconut trees were white. Ever heard of a White Raya? Doesn't photograph well too. Our lunch was at Sho Kushiage , a pork katsu joint. Mum was felt adventurous and ordered the premium katsu with chees

Kaiju-khrap

Friday paktor sessions sometimes get very interesting with KH. He brought me to APW Bangsar , an old printing press that houses a hipster food scene. According to its website, APW stands for Art Printing Works, historically one of Kuala Lumpur's major printers. In 2013, it was re-imagined as a creative industrial space. These days, all things retro are coveted and it's charm used to draw in customers. We ate at Kaiju Company , a Thai-Japanese fusion restaurant that has an origami dragon circling overhead. When the sun goes down, the dragon lights up. Cool, right? Many interesting choices there, but not all scored high marks. The Yoyoki Tuna Tataki with papaya salad was pretty good to start with. And the deep-fried chicken soft bone was a great beer snack that came served in a sake box. However, KH's choice of alcohol for the night wasn't to my liking. It was a sake-based cocktail that was paired with asamboi and chili. Can't get any more Thai-Japanese fu

HomeVacay I: From Brushing to Snuggling

Image
On Friday night, mum and The Tribe took a flight to Shanghai for a week-long vacation. That gave KH and I the perfect chance to have a 'vacation' of our own. More about that in a bit. On Saturday morning, I woke up bright and early to get to the dentist. Been more than a year since my last scaling and polishing session. By 8:00 AM, I was at Drs Wong and Partners ' HQ at Sri Petaling. Since Dr Wong only took walk-in patients on Saturday, I cranked up my kiasu -ness. Little did I realise that I lapsed into ultra- kiasu ness ( to quote Ridhuan Tee ). I was even earlier than the nurses. Basically waited for an hour before I could even take a number. And another forty minutes before I was in the chair. Gosh. In the treatment room, the nurse prepped me with a pair goggles and a bib. The goggles were something new. She then told me to be patient as Dr Wong would make an appearance shortly. When she recounted a story about a patient who stormed out of the chair due to lack of
