Susahnya Shopping

The end of the January marked my 8th year with KH, so I was determined to get him something special. Woke up bright and early, had my breakfast and headed out to Orchard for some inspiration. I walked from ION to Isetan to Takashimaya to Robinsons to Sommerset 313. No luck. Didn't see anything that fit into wonderful and affordable. Lol. Shopping in Orchard is not for the faint-hearted. Looked for lunch at Taka's Food Village. Saw 1A Currypuffs and immediately went for it. Chose an uncommon variety-- chilli crab. Find the skin so much better than Old Chang Kee. Supplemented with char siew bao and a pan-fried meat bao from one of the seasonal stalls and that was it. Sat at one of the benches and read "Strange Tales from China" while I munched away on the hot snacks. Before I left, there was another must-eat that I had to revisit-- Rive Gauche Patisserie . Years ago, KH bought me a slice of Guanaja from there. But my eyes caught sight of a more beautiful option-- P

2015's Virgin Singapore Trip

Note: Believe it or not, there are no food pics in this post because all the photos were so bad! On my first day in Singapore for 2015, I arranged a dinner date with Finnegan. Such a coincidence that he was in town for some business. He asked me about food options but I kinda drew a blank. In the end, I remembered a recommendation from my brother about a messy burger at Orchid Hotel, so I looked it up. The joint was called Two Blur Guys . Perfect location cause my office was in the vicinity and Finnegan was hoped up nearby. Met up at Tanjung Pagar MRT and found the place with little fuss. Finnegan looked well, but a little bit thinner from the last I saw him before Christmas season. He assured me that he was well, but just worrying a bit more. When an investor worries ( I'm guessing it's about money! ) I guess 2015 will not be such a smooth year. The signature dish at that burger joint is the pulled pork burger which unfortunately was sold out by dinner time. Picked an altern

Coffee Workshop

Asked mum whether she was up for marketing on Saturday morning and she said yes. However, the next morning I had to knock on the door to check on her. Turned out she wasn't feeling feeling well. Body aches. Her cough had dragged on for three weeks and guess an infection had flared up. Despite her condition, we went to the market anyway. A short trip cause there basically wasn't much vegetables to buy due to the rainy season. CNY shopping was gaining momentum. One could hear the songs, see the red clothes, seasonal biscuits and decorative items for sale. Mum didn't seem very into it. Had our favourite breakfast noodles then went over to the GP's. According to him, her respiratory tract was infected and so prescribed some antibiotics. In the evening, met up KH at 103 Workshop Cafe at Seri Petaling. Not ventured to that part of the woods on a while due to the jams and chaotic parking. I have upgraded it to the status of Cheras, i.e. that ghost place Good thing is

KKK

I thought of going to work on the 2nd of January but that idea got scrapped when I found out that none of my colleagues were going. All of them took replacement leave for Prophet Muhammad's Birthday on Saturday. Thought that since I was considered based in Singapore now, I wasn't eligible. But since my boss approved it, what the heck. Brought mum out for breakfast at Restoran New Seaview at Taman Damai Utama. For some reason, kopitiam seem to favour that name. With that many seas out there, the Klang Valley would be underwater by now. But at least this shop actually painted blue skies on the ceiling. Went to do some chores too. Cut my unruly hair and did some banking. Not a pretty sight at the branches. It was the start of the month and the the previous day was a public holiday. To top it off, a whole bunch of people turned up to withdraw their ASB dividends. Chaos. I just wanted to update my phone number so that I could get a stupid security pin to register for internet ba

NY 2015

What does one do on the first day of the year? Something meaningful to kick-start 2015? Of course I did nothing of the sort. Lol. First order of the day-- breakfast with mum, then brunch with the gang. Drove out all the way to Solaris Dutamas to eat at Whimsical . KH was working that day, but the year end closing could wait till he ate and saw his cute BF. Hehe. Was not impressed with the food at Whimsical. Mum and I just shared a Whimsical Pancakes cause we were still full from the wantan noodles . Nothing special except for the use of Cielo Dolci Gelato. And KH's cotton candy Affogato was just that, Affogato topped with cotton candy. Not necessary at all. Jalan-Jalan at Publika after that. They got some artists together to make their own interpretation of a Christmas tree. The paddy pyramid was downright ugly while I liked the one made of white metal bird cut-outs. Matched my T shirt prints! Didn't walk for long. Ended up on our butts again at Coffee Stain . Apollo was pis

NYE

Stayed at home during New Year's eve. SK scheduled for her maid to come over for some OT at my place cause she basically didn't have much to do at her place. In the morning, she updated me on the ETA, which was 10:30 AM. Plenty of time for me to have breakfast first. Drove out to the nearby kopitiam and had a huge serving of nasi lemak with chicken rendang to which the guy remarked, "makan kenyang pagi ni dik". Cis! Cleaning didn't take long. Settled the grills, windows, toilets and the floor. Not eat-off-the-floor clean, but good enough for a free cleaning service. SK packed chicken rice for lunch and when I opened the box, it was bursting with roast chicken, charsiew, siew yuk , chicken liver and cucumber slices! Like last year, celebrated the coming of the new year at church. No fireworks, just some fellowship and snacks. With the floods and QZ8501, the church didn't feel quite appropriate to have the night flowers. At the stroke of twelve, mum,

Restaurant Celebrities: Dolce Tokyo Darren

Image
Realized that I forgot to post about Dolce Tokyo Darren  from my last Singapore trip. Not a super cutie, but very pok pok chui if you like the student look. Only in Singapore do you get waiters wearing Hollister. Maybe they work part time just to buy a few expensive T-shirts. Scroll up and down fast enough and you get an animation of him looking at his watch. LOL.

Kenji in KL

Image
One day after Boxing Day, KH and I went to The Pavilion to meet his ex, Kenji. He was in town visiting family for the Christmas season. And he was at the city centre because of the Comic Fiesta at KL Convention Centre ( Kenji bought a bunch of art books and yaoi-related stuff, oh lala ). Met him for a late lunch at Taste Enclave because he said he had a craving for BKT. During our walk there, he told us about of his friend Sharky who was volunteering at the Comic Fiesta. Kenji said that he knew me. Feeling curious, I used Kenji's powerful influence to summon him to lunch with us. True enough, Sharky dutifully turned up although he was obviously a bit shy and awkward during lunch. So cute. Anyway, I don't know him. And when he said he knows me, he was referring to my online persona. Great to make another friend although so painfully young in comparison! And it's never a complete date with Kenji if one does not go for dessert. Visited Snowflake to satisfy his sweet tooth.

Christmas 2014

On Christmas Eve, the kids got half a dozen of Christmas muffins from a neighbour. The kid had recently taken up a decorative cupcake class, so she had plenty of baked goods to distribute. In the evening, the kids followed mum and I to Christmas Vigil mass. Also brought them to see the Nativity scene. Little Monster was quite interested to meet Baby Jesus. Unfortunately, the cantata was kinda disappointing with not enough Christmas classics. Just felt weird. Ate a late dinner at Sweet Bean , Seri Petaling. Very rarely do I have their main courses. Got a fried rice with chicken chop and seafood spaghetti. The rice they liked, but unfortunately the pasta was spicy. Christmas morning breakfast was at Soon Hing , Taman Equine. The place was full of customers, so it was lucky that we a found a table fairly quickly. Popular choices for the kids were wantan noodles and chicken hor fun . I also gave heir siew mai and char siew bao a try. Not bad la. Typical Soon Hing fair. Wonder ho

Hobbit Christmas

Image
One the eve of Christmas Eve (:P), went to watch "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" at GSC Signature, The Gardens Mall. While buying tickets, bumped into a friend who was doing the same. The difference was that we were on leave and he sneaked out of the office. :D. Quite an end to the Hobbit trilogy, though the book didn't really have enough substance for three movies. But it was interesting to see Galadriel going all ape shit on Sauron. Went to Tim Ho Wan after that. We weren't expecting much cause we've already heard all the bad comments. Thank goodness there was no line. Sampled their signature baked bun with BBQ pork. I wasn't impressed. KH commented that the real thing tastes nothing like that. Ideally eaten in Hong Kong or alternately Singapore. The Osmanthus jelly was quite fragrant with premium goji berries. The beefballs were disappointing due to its lousy texture. Just three items and we were outta there. Don't think I will be c

You've Got Balls

Right before Christmas, the Winter Solstice was celebrated. Had a reunion dinner at my sister's place and invited SK and Brian over too. And the tang yuan was special with a quad of homemade flavours: blue from Bunga Telang , green from pandan , yellow from pumpkin and purple from sweet potato . Not only different colours, but different textures due to the ingredients. I didn't do the rolling, left it to the kids to play. Hehe. Wouldn't want to rob a great childhood experience from them. And mum made the savoury variety for me, tang yuan in chicken soup! My favourite. I was a happy boy! Not sure if I ate 34 glutinous rice balls that year... huhuhu.
