Japan 0: Getting There was Half the Fun

Image
Arielle Nadel, on Flickr My maiden voyage to Osaka was 100% orchestrated by SK in November 2013. She contacted her travel agent, PluBoy to settle all the flight tickets and hotel bookings. Not an easy task, as the trip involved KH, my mum and The Tribe. Just a short trip, so we were able to fit it into the Aidilfitri long weekend. Although I had gotten the flight itinerary months in advance, I only noticed a spelling error on my mother's ticket two days before we flew. Why two days you may ask? That's when MAS allows you to perform web check-in ( cute right? ). I only noticed after I checked-in for my mum. In my panic, I gave PluBoy a call. He told me that I had to settle it the MAS ticketing office at that juncture. I called their customer service. I was on hold for approximately twenty minutes. The CSO told me that he was not authorized to correct the name on the ticket because there was more than 24 hours before flight time. He could only do it closer to the flight time

Early Church, Early Work

Image
Woke up bright and early on Saturday morning to have wantan noodles at Kong Kee . Mum decided not to go to OUG that day, so just grabbed a few items from the grocery stores in Puncak Jalil. On the way back home, stopped by at the playground where mum's friends were resting after their morning jog. Here's what transpired: Neighbour: So good that your son drives you around. My son is still sleeping! Moi: If you want, you can tumpang my car next time. Neighbour: Good, good. But I wish my son would be like you. So good. Still not yet have girlfriend ah? Go after my daughter la! Although someone is wooing her, I'll put in a good word for you! Moi: .................................. My mother just changed the topic. Phew. At noon, we went out to have lunch at Nihon-Kai . It was a full house that afternoon with a family even dining out on the pavement in the heat wave. Gratitude joined us. It was good as we had not had a proper meet up in months. He paid for lunch. Alw

Monday and Tuesday

Image
For the first time, the Federal Territories enjoyed a holiday for Nuzul Al-Quran . And with it falling on a Tuesday, I declared Monday a holiday for myself. Woke up late, freshened up and went over to my sister's place. Had a quick breakfast and went out to fetch Big Monster from kindergarten. Stopped for lunch at Restoran Sun Yun Heong Yun , Taman Damai Utama. Heard about this YTF place for months, but never went looking for it. Little Monster ate the porridge and salmon steak that my mum had packed, while Big Monster had the noodles that I ordered. Both of them were super hungry. The soup noodles and YTF were actually quite good. Will come back again to try their other stuff. Brought them all out to run some errands, then got back home at about 3:30 pm. Time for Little Monster's nap. Coincidentally, SK had 'snaked' too, so we went out to AEON Taman Equine to yumcha at Wong Kok Char Chan Teng . Feeling a little masochistic, SK ordered french toast. That pan-fried br

The Hunt for Nasi Dagang

Image
Note: Hello! I'm back! Was I missed? Did anyone lodge a missing blogger report? God-forbid did my visitor stats go down the toilet? Actually, I've just finished doing my laundry and reading all the mail, and my body is telling me it's bedtime although it's just 4:54 pm. Wish me luck battling jet lag and wish me luck writing about my great Canadian adventure with KH and processing the gigabytes of photos that I took! Meanwhile, I shall serve up more stale posts that are now two and a half months late! Enjoy. :D At Ante Kitchen the night before, Lifebook was telling me about a nasi dagang joint in Damansara Uptown. Initially, I thought it was Hayaki Cafe, a place famous for its indifferent, slow as molasses service. Turned out to be Capital Nasi Dagang ( 100% BUKAN milik bumiputera Melayu ). Needed Waze to navigate around that confusing place. Even on a Sunday its full of cars. Thankfully, Capital was located at one of the quieter rows. When mum and I arrived after

VAN

Image
Hi guys and gals. KH is flying to Vancouver today for his Society of Actuaries’ Fellowship Admissions Course today and I'm tagging along. All his years of hard work had finally paid of. Although it sounds like my ticket to Tai-Tai -hood, I'm not quite there yet. Anyway, we'll be in Canada for a fortnight, so this blog might grow some cobwebs in that time. Wish us a pleasant journey and hope that I can get lots of spy pics of Canadian cuties! See ya!

Fitting In

Image
Replenished groceries and fresh produce at the wet market on Saturday morning. Nothing out of the ordinary at all. Wanted to eat my favourite breakfast soup noodles at the lorong , but they weren't open! Gasp. So unheard of. That's how the Chinese are-- work, work, work, work, work then take long leave during the Lunar Chinese New Year. Or for the more calculative, make a killing during that period. But anyway, if you're at the OUG wet market, you may wanna consider having the Penang curry laksa stall at Restoran Sun Sea . The uncle has retired and the stall is now manned by two twinks. Go check it out. LOL. Back home, mum fired up the juicer. A great combination of Taiwanese white bittergourd and apples. Not bitter, but the after-taste is very refreshing. Wanna get my hands on more of the stuff. During lunch, mum whipped up some mee suah in chicken soup and topped it with poached free-range chicken egg. Wholesome and yummy. In the afternoon, KH came over to show off his

Little Monster, Little Eats

Image
Took half day leave on Monday to go to the lawyer's office. Woke up at about 8:00 am, freshened up and went out to buy breakfast. Ate the bittergourd noodles at my sister's house. At that time, Little Monster was already up and about. And his mood was exceptionally well that morning. Enquired my sister as to his lack of crankiness and she revealed that he had sufficient sleep the night before. In his hand was a large ham bun generously lathered with mayo. Sat him down at the dining table and his buffet continued: Milo Bittergourd noodles Bread with butter, blueberry jam and peanut butter Soft-boiled egg My appointment at the lawyer firm was at 11:00 am. Didn't take me long to reach IOI Boulevard. Took the wrong elevator and ended up a housing developer's office instead. The dapper gentleman in tight shirt and heavily-pomaded hair pointed me in the right direction. At the lawyer's office, I was given a run through of the legal shit I was gonna get myself int

Random Eats

Image
Lo and behold, I did not have lunch at Paradigm Mall on Sunday after church. While mum was buying nombor ekor , I fired up Foursquare to look for some good eats nearby. B & Best Restaurant at Taman Rasa Sayang came out tops. Wondering where Tamana Rasa Sayang is? Better fire up Waze. So hidden in my opinion. Got there easily enough and there was ample parking. However, finding a table during lunch time was another matter. Full house! And the plaze was abuzz with activity. Seems that seafood is their specialty with all sorts of fresh, imported items. Mum and went for the basics first to gauge their skill. I ordered the dry seafood noodles while mum tried out their fish head noodles. I ordered the dry noodles because I noticed that was what the majority was eating, and for good reason. So much pork lard in there! Was nice at first, but got geli towards the end when the noodles got cold. The soup was full of grouper fish slices fishballs, fresh oysters and seaweed. I didn't li

Missed Connections at a Burger Bar

Image
For a long-long time, SK did not join mum and I for Saturday marketing at OUG, preferring to settle it in Puncak Jalil. Quite miracle that she joined me that morning. Must have woken up too early and couldn't get back to sleep. Nothing new at the OUG Wet Market, except for a new stall selling birds nest! Basically the type that they rear in swiftlet houses. Unprocessed and chock full of feathers and pieces of wood. Mum bought two pieces and that came to around MYR30. Breakfast was at Restoran Alisan , Seri Petaling for the famous Hakka noodles. Lovely texture and big portion ( but a tad oily ). Too bad the place is ventilated like an oven. In the afternoon, was supposed to have lunch with ConanCat but he didn't turn up at  Burger Bar , Kuchai Lama. Didn't reply to the group chat and our calls went unanswered. Didn't think too much about, so we went ahead without him. We ( KH & SK joined ) tried all three types of meat-- pork, chicken beef. My jumbo sausage wa

It's All in the Stars

Do you watch Taiwanese and Korean dramas? At times, do you feel that the plots are far-fetched and all things that can go wrong will go wrong. And secrets always get out in the open with a bang? One doesn't need to be too creative really as these things happen in reality, with perhaps even more twists. One such example is my colleague of Ceylonese descent. Similar to India, society in Sri Lanka also favours arranged marriages. And with my colleague reaching marriagable age, his parents were already busy engaging marriage brokers and poring over catalogues of brides that are compatible with him from an astrology point of view. Wanting to be in better control of his future, he presented his own candidate to his parents. Lucky for him, they relented. Initial astrology checks did not raise any red flags so they continued on for more than a year. As the plans for marriage became more concrete, his future-in-laws consulted another astrologer. A celebrity astrologer mind you, someone wh

Japanese & Italian

SK bought several discount vouchers to purchase air-flown fish from Kuriya , Bangsar Shopping Center. Ever since she visit Tsujiki and Kuromon Market in Japan, she had wanted to recreate that experience. We planned to arrive earlier to have a better selection, but many more patrons were more kiasu than us. But actually, the crowd was due to a tuna cutting event there. Labelled it as "Chef vs Pacific Bluefin Tuna". Not much of a challenge since the fish was dead, but still. Haha. It definitely takes skill to prepare a fish that large and expensive! We did not have much choice left in the air-flown fish department. The only affordable fish was the madai ( Sea Bream ) and uni ( sea urchin ). Started with a sashimi and later the head and bones were made into delicious miso soup . Also ate a grilled hamachi collar, teppanyaki prawns, nigiri sushi and handmade soba . Shopped a bit at The Gardens Mall after lunch. A big haul of clothes from G2000 and Banana Republic. Some g

Meeting & Movies

Been a while since mum and I made a trip to the wet market. So it was a great chance for her to stock up on free-range chicken that are so great for soups and stocks. Had a simple breakfast of soup noodles at the OUG side lane. Simple, hot and wholesome. For lunch, KH arranged for lunch with Kenny at Delicious @ Bangsar Village II. I've not set foot in Delicious in years. Couldn't recognize the menu. Total revamp. Their branch in BVII is quite large and poorly-manned. Lethargic service, ten-cent faces... well you get the picture. Took a long look ( several looks actually ) at the menu before finally deciding on their pesto pasta with grilled chicken. Not bad la. Anyway, back to Kenny. The last I saw him was years ago during CNY. Since then his health was a bit of a roller coaster ride, but he has since recovered. Didn't take long to catch up. Walked around a bit after that, but truth be told, nothing much to shop at BV. On a whim, I decided to see Antinous to pass him th

DR = Disaster Recovery = Dah Raya?

Image
Late post: Memang dah raya pun! :P According to central bank requirements, banks need to perform disaster recovery exercises twice a year. For my client, the original date was on Easter Sunday, but they postponed it twice and finally it ended up on Father's Day. Crazy type of date selection. Went to the data centre at 5:00 am, but things didn't require my attention till 8:00 am due to some delays. Plenty of time to yawn, chit-chat and eat the free nasi lemak . The rest of my colleagues heboh bola while some even brought Astro-on-the-Go. Some hiccups while trying to bring up the system on the DR server but the worst was the network issues. Quite debilatating. Scrambled to get the workaround in place. My shift ended at noon, but I was still there after 2:00 pm. Ended up having the free nasi tomato for lunch. Reached home at 3:00 pm and konked out for three hours. Big Monster had a birthday bash at home. His dad invited his friends over. All young families, so plenty of kids

Vegetarian Birthday

Image
Apollo created a What's App group to organize QueerRanter-D's birthday gathering. Seems like the better alternative to e-mail threads these days. Much dispute about the date and time but we finally managed to arrange it on Saturday noon at U-Yen Vegetarian Restaurant . Two new faces joined the lunch-- Sam and KreamKing. I won't elaborate much on the food... cause it's vegetarian. But quite nice la. :P. Provided you don't let the fried stuff get soggy in the gravy. But I loved their passion fruit tea. Too bad they didn't have a large table to fit ten of us. Weird to have lunch with two small round tables. Awkward seating and forced to pass dishes up and down like musical chairs. Hate that. Didn't cut the birthday cake at the restaurant as the cake wasn't there yet. LOL. Apollo and gang went off in one car to pick up the cake from Foret Blanc while we went to buy 4D before going to Coffee Factory , Setiawalk. Tried their recommended Salted Caramel Latte

LRT Celebrities: Innocent Ignatius

Image
I just got back from a trip to Osaka and I have tonnes of photos to process and notes to elaborate. And of course I came back with spy shots of cute Japanese boys! But that will come two months later. Hahahahaha. In the mean time, here's a submission from KH while he was going home on the STAR line. So unbecoming of him to spy at twinks in my absence! Hmph. But anyway, enjoy Innocent Ignatius with his angelic face.
