Taiwan I: Cold Taipei, Warm Welcome

Image
TPE , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. BONUS MATERIAL in this super long-winded post ( first in the series of many! ): Taipei Celebrities -- Ching Shin Chad, Busker Brothers, BB Brent & Metro Mark! A year ago, SK, KH, Lifebook and I bought AirAsia X tickets to Taipei for a week-long holiday. As usual, we bought it with no concrete plans on whether we would be able to fly or not. Unfortunately, Lifebook pulled out at the very last minute due to critical work problems. Since all the lodging and local tour had been arranged, he had to pay the sum of nearly MYR1000 anyway. But then, Lifebook had jst recently come back from a Taiwan holiday with his family in January! Haha. So I guess not so bad and SK got to have the whole room to herself. Logistics were mostly handled by SK, who liased with the local tour guide. The uncle only understood Chinese, and he seemed to like dealing with SK, whom he loved to refer to as 美女 or 辣妹. Changed the itinerary several times based on preference

The Dao of Soup

Lotus Root Soup 莲藕汤 , swiped from wiffygal on Flickr. I'm Cantonese. I love soup. I love piping hot soup ( don't get how some people like to drink cold soup ). Give me lots and lots of soup. Slow-boiled or quick boiled, I love 'em all. I even would even down the soup ingredients, no matter how tasteless some people say they are. Here are some of my personal observations for soup. What's your favourite soup and do you have any special requirements? CNYXV: End

Image
Coach , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. The end of CNY was basically celebrated over the weekend. On Saturday, I had my CNY BEC gathering. Donned my reddest boardshorts and went with my fiery flip-flops. And finally started using the Coach wallet that KH got me more than a year ago. :D. There were rumours that the turnout might not be good, but still a good crowd came. Surprisingly during the sharing session, many people decided to open their mouths, thus making things quite lively. As usual, we had plenty of food and fun. Was also pleasantly surprised because a Taiwanese woman commented that I look to be in my early twenties! Wakakaka! But truth be told, I look older these days. New lines are taking shape on my face. Goodness. Time for collagen! And there is a very sticky couple in my church group that SK and I love to watch. Always new and refreshing gag-worthy moments. They have three daughters and the youngest daughter is already in college. When the facilitator mentioned tha

CNY VIII: Birthday and Preview

Image
Kani , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. On Sunday, I arranged a small gathering to celebrate SK's birthday at Pasta Zanmai , Paradigm Mall. Brought mum along as well since we were at church together and she knew most of my close friends. Among the guests were KH, Apollo, KT, Lifebook, JJ, and Bunny. We had a private room all the way at the back of the restaurant, but it was kinda hot though. Ordered a whole bunch of items to share. Post-lunch, we headed to Apollo's new optical shop in SS2 for a preview party. Lifeebook and KH tapau -ed some cakes from the nearby Free Mori for the celebration of the store opening and SK's birthday. The renovations for the shopfront and living area were quite good. I was most impressed with the workout room with full-length mirror. I can imagine making porn shoots there. After we had roamed the whole place, it was time for refreshments. Apollo the barista made us coffees while we messed up his workplace by trying on all the interest

Sugarcane , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. On Saturday, mum and I went to the wet market to replenish food supplies. Been cooking up a storm this holiday season. It was already CNY7 and the market was pandering to the needs of the Hokkiens who were gonna pray to the Jade Emperor on Sunday night. Many stalls were selling sugarcane ( people looked for straight stems and even cracked open stems had some positive meaning ), roast pork and paper offerings ( saw one costing MYR438! ). I'm sure many also stockpiled 'ammunition'. Didn't stay too long as I had a lunch appointment at my boss' place. He and his wife cooked up quite a storm-- stir-fried noodles, a whole big tray of honey-mustard pork ribs ( YUMZ ), home-made ham, belacan fried chicken and stir-fried vegetables. Also plied us with liqour-- white wine, beer and whisky. After two shots of the Bowmore, I was feeling kind of high. Lotsa kids came and luckily there was a platform elevator in the house to kee

Valentines Orgy

Image
Be My Valentines , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. What did an old couple do on VDay? We met up for lunch at La Cucur , KLCC and had nasi kunyit ( romantis giler kan? ). Unlike last year's elaborate card, I just a made a simple mini pop-up Valentine's. But we made up for it on Friday night. Visited Ozeki Italian Cuisine again, but we had a 'double date' this time. SK and Nicky05 joined us. Treated both of them as it was their birthdays were nearby. Passed Nicky05 a gift, but it was actually a belated Christmas gift that had been lying around for months. Of course we also took advantage of the happy hour wine deal. :D. For starters, we had the Zensai Moriawase . A small tester of anchovies, tuna and potato. Shared a whole bunch of other items: Toro Salmon Sumibiyaki ( a whole long cut of grilled salmon belly top with a type of marinara sauce ), Kobuta Maruyaki ( a very oily piece of suckling pig served with taters ), Wagyu Karubi Saikoro Steak ( wagyu beef cubes

CNY III & IV: Lenovo & Canon

Brocolli , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. Note: I'm back from Taiwan! Did anyone miss me? By CNY3, my sister was already back in KL, and so she paid us a visit first some time before lunch. Like a second reunion dinner, mum recreated some of the dishes that we had several days before. Another day of gluttony. Gave red packets to both my nephews. A first for the little one. He immediately shoved the pink packet into his mouth. =_=. Around 3:00pm, SK and I went out to pai nien with my MIL. She gave us red packets the first moment we went through the door. I think she remembered that she did not give us anything last year. Didn't talk much to my MIL. She greeted me and then mumbled halfway through, like she did not know what to say. Thankfully, she went to nap later, giving us some privacy to fool around on the couch. Braver than usual, KH even pulled me into his room. No full-fledged skanking though. But good enough for a start. Good enough that KH needed to change into a

Breakfast , swiped from williamnyk on Flickr. On the second day, I wolfed down half a big pau for breakfast. Once again, we made our way to The Gardens Mall to catch BeautifulMale's last performance. This time we were way early. LOL. Loitered around the place waiting for things to be set up. Even witnessed the sound check. LOL. Lifebook and Apollo also joined us. Was a good half an hour of subdued and mellow CNY songs. According to BeautifulMale, it was a requirement set by the mall management. Need to keep up with the classy and atas atmosphere. Dok dok chiang doesn't quite fit in I guess. Enjoyed their singing and a happy viewer even went up to them to distribute red packets halfway through. They were a bit stunned by that. Later in the evening, mum, SK, SK's granny, my brother and I made our way to Gratitude's abode in Klang to have dinner. First to arrive was Apollo. Iron Chef Klang whipped up a giant pot of yummy porridge that was swarming with dried oysters an
