CNY II: Happy Neo Year

Image
iPhone82 Swiped from williamnyk . Since mum, sis and I made a trip to Teluk Intan in January, mum decided that we would be spending CNY in Kuala Lumpur. Staying put. Oh thank you, thank you, thank you! So what did we do on the second day of CNY?~~ do what all KL-ites do, watch inane CNY movies. SK treated us to "Homecoming" at IOI Mall ( there was some Malaysia Book of Records longest tassel at 18.28m there... stooooopid ). In my book, the movie wasn't that funny at all. It did have some emotional moments, but not quite intense enough. Overall it was entertaining enough for a lazy CNY afternoon, even if one has to put up with Ah Niu, Jack Neo in drag and the ever 'likable' Afdlin Shauki. Lunch was at Penang Village . I like how they collage the wall with loads of sketches of pre-war buildings. Food, however was a disappointment and the service lethargic. Can you imagine that the waitress took her sweet time cleaning the table next to us when she knew th

Photographing Mike West and Eric Pryor right now. Swiped from full_exposure . iPhone's auto-correction is driving me nuts. Muacks to Muscle . Argh. Why isn't it learning the new signature! No problem previously. Ish. Perhaps I should find some alternatives. Any suggestions?

CNY I: A Red Sash

Image
IMG_3535SIC Swiped from williamnyk . Ever since mum embraced Catholicism, it has become a tradition for us to attend Chinese New Year mass at church every year. The church would be all decked out in red cloth, with lanterns and flowers. The giant crucifix would be flanked by a couplet which is more in tune with God and love rather than riches and prosperity. A record turnout this year with parishioners overflowing out the entrances. Even YB Theresa Kok was spotted sitting outside. So packed that the hospitality ministers could not stand at their usual posts at the back of the church. Helped out with the collection again, and was designated the coolie to carry the big baskets mandarin oranges for distribution. Mass proceeded as usual, but with the added ceremony of paying respects to our ancestors accompanied with a reading from the Book of Sirach. At the end, the priest distributed red packets and blessed mandarin oranges. Inside the red packets were some money and the Word of

Reunion Dinner Swiped from williamnyk . Since SK did not go back to Kuantan for CNY, we decided to hold a combined reunion dinner. Apollo had to work during the CNY stretch and conincidentally Eva would be in town for a few days before needing to fly back to Jordan, so we roped them in too. A potluck where mum would cook half and SK settle the other half. Unfortunately, come Tuesday, Eva FFK! So apt coming from an air stewardess. :P. Over dim sum breakfast ( which happened near lunchtime cause she sleeps like a piggy ) at Yuen Garden , she told us that she would be flying to Kuching to be with her boyfriend. Sigh. Guess that we couldn't blame her. Surprisingly, the wu kok that day was very good, else I would have been in a fouler mood. :P. Come Wednesday morning, Apollo FFK too! Blame it on the boyfriend again! Haha. Coincidentally, his boyfriend couldn't get a ticket out to Australia, so he stayed back in KL to spend it with Apollo. But then, I can't hold a grudge

No Oil?

Image
No Oil? Swiped from williamnyk . I dunno whether you guys noticed this... but if you were out shopping for groceries before the CNY period, you would have noticed that peanut cooking oil was in very short supply. On the other hand, corn, flower, olive and canola oil was in abundance. In my opinion, the shortage of oil is far more serious than sugar. I can live without sugar in my coffee and I take Milo kosong anyway, but one can't even stir-fry a simple vegetable without cooking oil. Forget about the substitute cooking oils for a second. One can argue that it can be done with a non-stick pan or perhaps butter... but it just isn't the same hor ? But I guess it's a good start to steaming and blanching one's food. Would do wonders for my waistline. But then again, i would still drizzle some oil over my blanched vege. :P. So what is it for you? Cooking oil or sugar? P.S.: I'm sorry that the auntiness quotient of this post is way above regulations... I don'

Wu's Rings

Wu's Rings Swiped from williamnyk . Remember how I was raving about Empress Wu 's chunky rings? Here they are! What do you think? Should KH get them for VDay? Wakakakakakakaka. Oh well, I'd be happy to get a card. With KH in Singapore, I'd be singing: All by myself Don't wanna be, all by myself anymore All by myself Don't wanna live, all by myself anymore Amyway, Happy Valentine's Day kepada yang bukan beragama Islam. Kepada yang beragama Islam, Selamat Maulidur Rasul! Muacks! ( just realized this sounds like SimonLover! )

iPhone Dead Swiped from nathanborror . On Monday, I took replacement leave for New Year 2011. I did not sleep in but woke up early to go to the market. My mum is amazing. If you bring her to the market every day before CNY, I'm sure she'd find something to buy each day. Never mind that, but at least that trip to the Taman United Wet Market gained me a mayorship on FourSquare. Wakakaka. Decided to settle some chores on that day too. Braved the long queues at TNB and Syabas to change the name on my utility bills. While waiting for my turn at TNB, I noticed that my iPhone blacked out. Just a minute ago I was fiddling with it with 22% battery left and the next minute it was dead! Peculiar! Tried charging it in the car, but there was no response. Tried it with direct power at home, but with the same results. My heart sank. So I grabbed my warranty card and headed for the DiGi Center at Sunway Pyramid. It was a long wait without a phone to fiddle with! But it was fun watchin

Belut Pulang Ke Lumpur II: A Foodie Goodbye

Kuantan201101 Swiped from williamnyk . The next morning, we celebrated the mass at St. Thomas Church . The celebrant was a visiting Vietnamese priest and I was quite shocked to see that the altar boys and parish priest wore non-matching batik . :S. What was more shocking was the fact that he was so openly anti-establishment. Lovely. Just like the ones in Penang. XD. Managed to take a peek at my old secondary school, St. Thomas Secondary School. Saw this sign out front: Datang dengan harapan. Pulang dengan kejayaan. I wonder if I qualify? Looked pretty much the same, except for a fresh coat of paint. So many memories there. Breakfast was BKT at Restorang Chong Sun near my brother's primary school. Opposite it was Kedai Ya Mah stationery shop where I would wait for my brother when I was young with a Mickey Mouse popsicle in hand. :). The BKT had a good fragrance and definitely better than what one eats in KL ( not talking about Klang, so Klang-ites don't jump me on thi

iPhoneFullMoon Swiped from williamnyk . Ever since I left Kuantan to pursue my tertiary education in Kuala Lumpur, I never once revisited the East Coast. So kacang lupakan kulit , right? Hehe. So, when SK asked a favour of me to follow her back to Kuantan to pick her granny up, I readily accepted. We left KL at about 1:00pm as SK had a physiotherapy appointment in the morning. Zoomed onto MRR2 only to be greeted by a massive crawl from Pandan Indan right up to the Genting Sempah exit. Really infuriating. Wasted one hour there. :S. Had my lunch behind the wheel. While I cursed the traffic, SK would stuff char siew bao into my mouth. Basically, it was smooth sailing from Karak onwards. Potty stop was at Temerloh and we bought a packet of sub-standard steamed peanuts. On and off it rained, making the drive not so pleasant. Arrived at Bukit Setongkol, Kuantan in under four hours. Great timing as it was SK's nephew's full moon celebration ( got to eat some angku ). The kid w

LRT Celebrities: Macy Gray

Image
For some reason, LRT Celebrities is one of my more popular segments on my blog. Quite surprised that a reader approached me with his own contribution. Brings a warm feeling to my heart knowing that I managed to encourage people to become LRT voyeurs. LOL. Who knows, maybe one day, someone would submit a picture and I would go... "That ass looks very familiar... OMG, IT'S ME!" A probable future. LOL. Anyway, today's episode is sponsored by Ash Eats Godiva and it definitely isn't me! Here's what Ash had to say about her. "you know what...her hairstyle brighten my day and make me feel my fever better....may god bless her and may she spread the happiness like herpes.lol" Her hair is kinda interesting. Definitely reminds me of Macy Gray. Who would have thought that an afro has the power to spread happiness. :). Keep on clicking!

Guān Yǔ

Image
Guan Yu Swiped from kam kah zen . To many Chinese, Guān Yǔ is a familiar figure immortalized as a Taoist diety in many homes and business premises ( if you watch HK triad movies, he is worshipped by the cops and criminals alike! ). He is often depicted with his Green Dragon Crescent Blade, either standing majestically or riding a horse. Sometimes, the idols are made of him sitting down with a book. From the stories, he is described as someone with a dignified stature, a red face and a long beard. Quite a sight, no? Now, why do I blog about this? Well, because I am a sucker for period dramas and I'm currently watching "三國" although I hardly understand 20% of the dialogue. Episodes 25 through 26 really brought out the cool factor, kinda like how Taiwan pop-star idol shows do it. Much screen time was dedicated to him, where he "crossed five paths and slayed six generals". So invincible! And gotta love how he flicks his beard and wields his blade with a flo

You Know It's CNY When... Swiped from williamnyk . You know it's Chinese New Year when... You hear tok-tok chang on radio. Wrong. You see houses decked with lanterns and faux red crackers. Wrong. You see a mad rush for bak kwa . Wrong. Banks start giving out red packets. Wrong. People start shopping for red clothes. Wrong. You see the wet markets inundated with waxed meat, assorted nuts and new year cakes. Wrong. You see la la zhai after la la zhai buying new underwear. Bulls eye. Happy Chinese New Year to all my readers. May you be jumping with joy and f*cking like rabbits in heat. And that your renunion brings your family closer together. Enjoy the holidays, drink more water, eat less junk food, don't play with illegal fireworks, do not gamble and drink excessively and drive safely! Hehe.

The Emperor's New Clothes

Image
Marie Suzuki taffeta polka dots party dress #4 Swiped from shiroibasketshoes hopper . At Salabiance, One Utama, I caught sight of a middle-aged aunty trying on a new dress. Polka-dotted with a flowery sash. And best of all, it had a big flare with some kind of underwire and lace at the hem. She was a petite woman and that dress managed to make her look like a blimp. It's magic! Doubtful at first, but after looking at herself in the mirror and getting more convincing comments from the saleswoman ( she can really lie through her teeth ), she bought it in the end. Such a scene repeats at the many hundreds of retail outlets in malls across the country. I for one don't need to buy any new clothes this year. It's a blessing really not needing to frantically join the shopping rush. Sitting in my wardrobe are several surviving new articles of clothing from 2010. A couple of T-shirts, one short sleeve shirt, one long sleeve shirt, one tank top and countless briefs and trunk

Locked Out

Image
London, Tate Gallery, Anna Lea Merritt: Love Locked Out, 1889 Swiped from groenling . For years and years I had been using the same old e-mail password. It originated from the address of my old industrial training site in Cyberjaya. That was like a decade ago! However, that password is no more. For some reason, I could not log into my GMail account the other day and I had to reset my password. I tried the SMS method and I got the reset code on my phone 5 times faster than an m2u TAC. Impressive. Quickly changed my password and went through the account activity. Found nothing suspicious. I still don't know what happened. In the midst of all this, Kidz could not access my blog and immediately got KH to ask me. He thought that I closed my blog down. Later on, I found that my GTalk auto sign-on failed with an "Account locked" message. Hmmm, I really wonder...

Coloured Rabbit

Image
Colour Rabbit Swiped from ssoosay . Last Sunday, SK, mum and I ventured to Michael & Guys , One Utama to get our hair done. The senior stylist there was clever enough to call SK and entice her with some CNY promotions. Cut + Dye + Treatment for only MYR168. For longer hair, just add MYR30. SK and I opted for colour, whereas my mum just did a hair treatment for MYR60. This time round, I did not go for anything too obvious. Chose a more subdued and natural hue. So subdued that none of my colleagues noticed! @&^%$#$#. But I guess that was the desired effect. The shampoo guy was most talkative. Typical beng -ish type from JB with super-blonde, straightened hair. At first I thought that he was the curly type, but later on, he kept asking about girlfriends and how after a certain age one should be quite ashamed of receiving red packets. Goodness. Even after my chemical treatment was done, he kept chatting with me and even let me play with his new Nokia N8. Tak faham betul!

Comfortable?

Image
Anuar Zain for MStar Caught sight of this full page item on MStar , The Star's weekly Malay pullout. It featured Ziana Zain's kid brother ( still applicable now that he's over 40? ), Anuar Zain. For the benefit of my beh hiau Bahasa Melayu readers, the caption reads: "Anuar Zain: Selesa Tanpa Wanita" Yes folks, he's forty. Unmarried. Not bad looking. And most importantly, comfortable without women . If I were him and if I was straight ( choi, choi, choi! ), I would definitely feel uncomfortable with that statement emblazoned on a tabloid. Sounds too ghey kan ?

Kugutsu no Jutsu

Puppets! Swiped from cgines . Celebrated Janvier's 30th birthday at E42T: 42 East Restaurant and Bar , TTDI on Thaipusam. The name of the restaurant is a bit of a word play. In the logo, the "42" in "E42T" is manipulated to look like "AS", hence giving you "EAST". SK and I did not easily find the place although it was facing the main road. Got cheated by Google Maps. Somehow Lorong Rahim Kajai 14 does not show properly in it. The Chief managed to secure a private party at the venue. Most of us pre-ordered the pork ribs set. At just 40++, one gets mushroom soup ( watered down ) with garlic bread, grilled pork ribs ( tender, but had a weird citrus rind taste ) and fruits to close. And you get a pint of Carlsberg too! The table was split into two, so Janvier sat in the middle with a swivel chair so that no one would feel left out. Nah, it didn't happen like that. He chose the boring way and just moved around. This time round, Leggy

Conexión

Image
connection Swiped from rent-a-moose . If you're reading this, you most probably live two lives. One~ flesh and bone. Blood and sweat. The other~ 1s and 0s. IE and Firefox. Truth be told, we feed quite a lot of our REAL lives into our digital lives. Much time invested into uploading our lives onto the WWW. Not quite Tron, but I'm sure we can get there some day. For me, both lives are important. Imagine IM-ing about everything under the sun, but clam up when meeting each other Imagine having animated discussions in person, but ignore each other in social networking sites and blogs Scenario 1 is definitely disastrous, but to me scenario 2 is also bad. In my opinion, we should try to connect with each other in all possible channels, not just stick to one. But I guess there are many people who are Cyberspace lurkers . They read and read and read. Stalk and stalk and stalk. But never make their presence known and never leave their thoughts. Or, there are people who rely

Chirashi-don Swiped from williamnyk . Ever since I put up my Contact Me feature I have made some interesting interactions with my readers. Some normal. Some abnormal ( definitely something for another post ). Enjoyed some e-mail conversations, perhaps some FB and IM interaction. If things click, we may end up meeting face to face. So far I've met Lun, a youngn' who works near my office. And recently, Finnegan, an Irishman based in HK. He was in town for a couple of days, so we arranged a lunch date on Saturday. Picked him up from the Gardens Hotel ( the traffic was exceptionally smooth. I was expecting Hell from CNY shoppers! ) and drove over to nearby Nihon-kai . Had their Chirashi-don accompanied by a nice chat. More often than not, the topic veered towards food and travel. Found him to be quite a shy person. Likes to think before he speaks ( So unlike me. Should I tone down my laser? Haha, I think not ). Can tell that he loves having intellectual discourses but I do

Dr. No

Image
Another crazy Doc Swiped from Erik K Veland . Mum complained about a mysterious itch on her right thigh for more than a week. On and off with a wave of numbness now and then. How weird right? No marks on her skin whatsoever. Must be some kind of nerve problem I thought. Quite at a lost on which specialist to consult. Then on Thursday, she complained of body ache, sore throat and rashes started coming out on her thigh. Aha! That's something to go on. I actually thought it was shingles, but she reported no pain. Advised her to see the nearby doctor. A big clinic franchise~ MedivXXXX. The doctor said that it was viral, but it was not shingles. "Aunty, very serious already, need to give you a jab. It costs $150." After paying the fees of MYR190, her sore throat and body ache did go away, but the itchy rashes stayed. I told her to get a second opinion. SK recommended Alam Medic in OUG. I was quite surprised at what the doctor there said. "Aunty, don't wor

ck free-耿乐 Swiped from 普渡众神 花 . Just received a spill-over from Christmas 2010-- A 100ml bottle of cK Free from SK!!! Hehe. And it came with an embroidered Christmas card. Thanks a bunch! *muacks! Here's a bit of trivia for you: 1) I use Lacoste Pour Homme purely for work 2) I use Bvlgari Aqva only on weekends and holidays 3) I use Esprit Connect randomly Don't have to sniff me to confirm this. I adhere to it semi-religiously. :P. Perhaps I should have a special scent for when I go on dates with KH. :P (1) and (2) should be finishing soon, so I can start cK Free soon lo. What do you use to smell good?

Conveyancing

Image
iPhone6-2Duck Swiped from williamnyk . Right after my trip to Brunei, mum made an ad hoc decision to go to Teluk Intan the next day to settle some legal issues. I just nodded lo. Luckily I wasn't too tired from the short trip. On touchdown, I waited an hour at LCCT for my sister to arrive ( used the time to have a teleconversation with SK and What's App my client due to some work problems ). Mum and Cyan tagged along. The kid was sleeping in the car, exhausted from his second day in pre-school. Ended up at Restoran Puchong YTF for dinner. Still nice, but portions have taken a dive. The journey out of KL took place at 7:30am the next day. BIL drove. We wasted one hour trying to get to the PLUS highway as the roads were choked by a stalled trailer on the Puchong-Sg. Besi Highway. %$#@%^. Stopped for breakfast at Restoran Sin Thien Thien , Bidor. I had wantan noodles while the rest tried the herbal duck noodles. When I compare the duck noodles, I found it better than P

Alcoholics Anonymous

Image
Red Wine Mee Suah Swiped from J2Kfm . Brunei is quite an alcohol-free country. I don't see alcohol being sold openly. If you bring it in from outside, you'll have to declare it at customs. The other day, my colleague ordered chicken soup mee suah . The boss immediate put on a shady look, tapped him on the shoulder and whispered: "Pssst. Wanna add wine or not?" Goodness. From the way he was asking, I thought he was offering porn DVDs or China Doll blowjobs! So poor thing kan ?

Revolusi

Pelbagai aktiviti menarik disediakan utk menarik minat golongan belia yg terbiar ini supaya mereka sedar bahawa Wira PERKASA Malaysia mendengar luahan hati kecil mereka. If a Mat Rempit can be called a Wira Negara , why not glorify the Mat Gian  as well? They've been around longer than anyone can remember. Syabas Wira Perkasa ! The money could have been better spent buying bullets for our trigger-happy police. I'm sure we'd see positive change in their luahan hati kecil  with gunfire to moti

iPhone65AirAsia Swiped from williamnyk . "Suddenly Brunei", as Alexander the Gay likes to put it. Had to make a trip to Brunei for several wrap up meetings with my client's consultant. An annoying Hungarian guy. Ugh. In case you're wondering~ no, he's not hot. Anyway, SK was supposed to pick me up but somehow, her alarm didn't go off. Ended up half an hour late. Still, I had ample time. This time round, I discovered something new about AirAsia's self check-in system. One can now use one's iPhone. Log on. Key in the information and they will send you a 2D barcode. Bring it up on your iPhone and flash it at the scanner kiosk. A boarding pass will be printed for you. Not bad. Just had fifteen minutes to talk to SK before I went into the departure hall. The flight was uneventful except that it was quite full and people turned up right up till the last minute. Blegh. I wanted to fly on Sunday afternoon, but it was sold out, no doubt due to the end

Out of Order

Image
I have no intention of turning this into a "Mind Your Language" segment ( people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones :P ), but I just had to post this. Spotted it at Mayflower , Jalan Tun Sambanthan. This stall serves quite a wicked fried spaghetti. A bit oily, but OK la. When you look at that cute little note, I'm sure you can understand where the owner is coming from. But I just can't help but think that he has a frozen piece of Dory jumping up and down in his freezer some where. Hahahahaha.

paper ornaments 2 Swiped from minimallyinvasivenj . Mum was complaining about her limp hair for weeks, so after church we went to Taman Megah to get her hair curled. Before that, had lunch at the nearby kopitiam . Ordered a tomato kuay teow . Did not know what it was, but gave it a try anyway. A BAD gamble. The bloody dish took half an hour to arrive. It was just wat tan hor with egg gravy replaced with tomato sauce. KNS. A family beside me also ordered three plates of that stupid thing and after fifteen minutes of waiting, the hawker told them they had run out of stock. I wanted to tell the lady, "No loss!". Since mum's chemical service would take around 3 hours, SK and I decided to go to One Utama. Upon seeing the jam into One Utama, we went to The Curve instead. Plenty of parking at Cineleisure. As usual, SK spent a few hundred ringgit in just half an hour of shopping for bras and cosmetics. :S. Later on, we met up with Lifebook at Pappa Rich. Then went birth

The Eve of Four Ones

Image
Little Korea On Friday morning, I got up at 7:00am and drove mum to Taman Bukit Jalil for a jog. At the start, it was mostly brisk walking. Only later did I ditch mum and did some jogging. Thought I was doing OK until bent over to pull up my socks. When I got up, I felt that the blood flow to my brain wasn't quite right. Started seeing static and white stars. Goodness. Took some time before the feeling of faintness passed. Wonder if it was due to me bending over ( jangan fikir lain ) or because I did not eat before going for the jog. Guess it was a little bit of both. While walking back to the car, we saw a father-daughter team who were both having a leisurely walk while munching on big pau 's. That's how we should all exercise! Breakfast was at Jalan Lazat, OUG. Ordered seafood noodles that came in a soup so sweet that I could very well had been drinking tong sui . The only positive was the fact that the auntie gave many prawns and it was fresh. Give me some grub!

LRT Celebrities: El-Ar-T

Image
La-la-li-tam-plong! Today is 2011's first edition of LRT Celebrities. No format change will take place and we shall continue to uncover the interesting side of commuters on the LRT. This time round, I highlight the height of lala-ness . Lala #1 on the left is your typical big-eyed kid with sharp facial features and J-Pop hair. At certain angles he does look quite pleasant but what caught my eye was the fact that he was using powder on his face. I guess it was cover some of his acne scars. Still it was quite obvious and I don't I will ever paint my face with the exception of doing a studio photoshoot. Clothes-wise he was in tight fitting slacks, slim-cut shirt and pointy leather shoes. The look is completed with a little angst-y frown. The epitome of the office lala . Lala #2 is your typical Berjaya Times Square breed. Going around town shopping at MYR10 shops. Gangly and tanned with fantastic plunging V-neck, complete with super bling necklace. He's going for the whole W

A Golden Christmas

Image
A Golden Christmas Swiped from williamnyk . Note: More leftovers from 2010. Hehe. With the holiday season in full swing, even church attendance suffered. Parking was not a hassle and it was relatively easy to find seats. After church, we went to Pavilion to catch the "Golden Christmas" there. Did not get to see the artificial snow as reported by the newspapers. But it was impressive none-the-less. Plenty of people were streaming in to cam-whore. Seeing that the Food Republic was crawling with shoppers, we chose something less chaotic~ Ichiban Boshi . Been some time since I ate there. Noticed a difference in the menu and uniforms. SK wasn't feeling well ( after downing a whole packet of nasi lemak no less! ), so she just munched on a temaki . Mum and I shared a salmon head misu soup and a unagi omelette set. Just window shopping that day. Mum wanted to get a pair of Skechers, but no size. SK wanted to get a dress for HP's wedding, but the price was prettier t

I can't believe that it's 2011. So many things that I procrastinated on at the end 2010, telling myself that I'd do it after all the holidays were over. The new year is now here and I still don't feel like doing my work!!! Argh. Focus! Focus! Focus! Anyway, hope everyone had a good time ushering in the new year. Here are some leftovers from 2010 that I really should blog about-- gifts from friends and loved ones! Seeing that I had collected the keys to my apartment, SK got me a very practical and classy gift-- Clipsal switches and sockets. She even calculated the exact number of points that I would be needing! Thanks a whole lot! A little piece of New York that Kidz brought back for me. Laser-customized with my name! Thanks a whole lot! It's hanging on my laptop bag now. ^_^ And this crystal pendant was given by KH. Supposed to protect the wearer from physical harm. He did not know my Chinese name, so he engraved it in English instead. Muacks! May everyone
