Sunday Brunch

Though I frequently distend my tummy by going for buffet dinners, it has been t least 8 years since I had a high tea. Since I had a free high tea for two compliments of Milennium Hotel ( formerly known as Regent Hotel ), I finally went to break the dry spell. Truth be told, not exactly FOC also la, I already paid for it when the telemarketer suckered me into joining their membership. So, if anyone wants to eat there or rent a room, you can give me a ring and you'll get 50% off the bill. It was a family outing with my mum, sister and brother-in-law. A nice cozy buffet of Western ( scallops and raw oysters! ), local ( ever had Char Kuey Teow with Salmon and Cod fish slices? ) and Japanese cuisine, dim sum ( siew mai and crispy deep-fried wanton! ), seafood barbeque ( sweet, succulent lobster! ), cute-sy desserts and free-flow beer. In addition to the food, you have guitarists crooning oldies like "Mr Bojangles" and Gypsy Kings fare. There was even a clown ( didn't ge

collage8 Swiped from williamnyk . A continuation... On Sunday, I dragged KH to to church. We went to the Church of the Blessed Sacrement somewhere in Alexandra Road. The mass time published in the website is wrong so by the time we arrived, it was already the homily. A very triangular church with a woody interior. The liturgy is fancier than I'm used to. Much use of incense and they even have a gong! I noticed a few things about the church. Firstly, the collection is really ineffective. They really should use longer poles. Secondly, I met the most kiasu Catholic. He actually went for communion twice! Talk about finishing your quota for the day. Pengz! We left church, then headed to Chinatown Point to look at the SportsmenAsia shop. A very impressive collection. KH actually got me someting from there. Thanks dear! As my throat was a bit sore, I bought gui lin gao there, from a shop called Hong Woh Tong , a blatant rip-off of KL's Kwong Woh Tong. Everything looks the s

After Mowing Swiped from great_sea . After 2.5 haircut-free months, I have finally shorn off my unruly locks. It had grown really thick and any attempt to style usually ends in failure. It just swallows all the products I put in it. Heh. The whole thing started when my stylist, KK decided that I should change the length of my hair. I visited him twice and both times he turned me back. So when the day finally came to cut my hair, it ended up pretty much the same. "Eh, what's the difference ah?" The front part is just slightly longer. That's about it. Well, I don't really care, at least I save RM72 worth of haircuts. And my head feels much lighter now. But I guess my shampoo and hair wax usage increased. Can't win 'em all. Bah! But, KH approves of my new / old look. Says my hair used to get in the way when trying to get to my ear... ehehe. It tickles! When I was there, I also got to meet Mike, Snips' CEO. Only in his 30s. Not flamboyant or anyth

During my first day in Singapore, didn't spend much time with my dearest as KH's boss demanded that a stupid task be completed and tickets to a play were already bought beforehand. So let's just call it bad timing. Hoewever, it wasn't a total loss as it gave me a chance to meet my long lost friends Chia and Kiat whom I had not met in 4 years. They had recently gotten married and SK and I wanted to treat them to a meal since we both couldn't make it to their wedding as it clashed with our BKK trip . We met at the Singapore Zoo and we were an hour late ( due to my zombie-ness in the last post ). By the time we arrived in Mandai, Chia and Kiat were already waiting in the KFC ( wonder what's with KFC and zoos ). Chia had woken up at 7:00am to prepare egg mayo and sardine sandwiches-- just like old times in Form 6. Brings back nice memories. It was a wet morning and we nearly abandoned our plan, but the rain let up so we did

Transparency Swiped from Edgar Thissen . Hi everyone. I've been real busy trying to chase my deadline lately and frankly, it ain't looking good. Sooner or later, the gauntlet is going to be thrown and someone's neck is going to be on the chopping block. A responsibility I can't shirk. My team is already working very hard and I only have myself to blame. To make things worse, an ad hoc thing has popped up and I have been given the green light to forget about my current project at the moment. Well, let's just say that it isn't a pretty distraction. I'm nearly at my wit's end. Just waiting for the final straw. Heh. Negativity aside, I'm sure there are quite a few of you ( DanielH! ) who're dying to learn about the sordid details of my 'conjugal visit' to Not-So-Sunny Singapore. Tortilla Chip Dip SK brought back a EUR2.00 packet of Fuego Tortilla Chips, so my sister whipped up a dip that ironically costs more than the chips. Here's the recipe: Mayonaisse Cream cheese Parsley Boiled eggs Lemon juice Bits of crispy bacon Directions: Baling all together. Voila! To demonstrate a slice of her life in Germany, SK prepared us her typical breakfast. Here's the recipe: Wheat bread Cheese Tomatoes Coral lettuce Bacon Paprika-Pepperoni Salami Directions: Stack 'em all together. Voila! We parted in very clouded circumstances. Thunderclouds over our heads. The last time we saw each other, SK needed to whisk me to KH's side by the cover of night. The last time we touched, embraced. Looked into each other's eyes. Kissed. Since then, we had resorted to the distant crackle of voices through copper wires, strings of 1s and 0s floating through telco waves. Sweet SMS. Skanky MMS. Simple chats via IM. E-mail conversations. A rare hand-written card. A treasured letter. Some lost thoughts in the mail. Good things come to those who wait.

Last Duck in Macau

Image
Photo-0095 Swiped from williamnyk . Wanted to try out this duck place at Sri Petaling with my di the duck enthusiast, but never got around to it. Before eyebrows are raised, the duck mentioned here is not the the Metro Tokyo Club Raphael sort, but rather the more boring roast duck rice. Walked into Chan Kong Kei (Macau) Roast Duck on a rainy Sunday afternoon and ordered some of their signature dishes, namely the Traditional Roast Duck over Noodles, Black Pepper Duck over Rice, Dumplings and Wanton in Soup. To wash it all down, I ordered a glass of boiled Haw ( Haw Flakes that Haw ). I must say that the traditional roast duck is quite good. Very fragrant and the meat is moist. Can't really say the same for the black pepper variant, but still a refreshing change from the norm. The black pepper duck is drier and crispier with loads of black pepper corns. On the first bite, you may find that the duck tastes bland, but trust me, the black pepper effect runs on a time-release

Examinations Swiped from Giulio Riotta . KH, my significant other gave me this parable the other day: "You've done well in your STPM, and so you secured a place in university. It's now your first year and you're slacking off. Not working hard for your final exams. You may still have time to catch up, but to succeed, you must start to work hard..." No need to scratch your heads. I'm not going back to school. It has to do with a personal battle of my own. The exam is my Mother . The syallabus is the Truth . I find it real ironic that my situation is likened to that of a boyfriend being pressured into introducing the girlfriend to the parents. He loves her, but parents object to their union. Typical Sunday afternoon Hindi movie fare. But there is a difference. KH has met my mother. And the truth not only spells acceptance for KH, but for myself as well. I am still walking the path of daggers. I had somewhat forgotten. Thanks for reminding me, dear.

After enduring a stifling, gummy 6 hours in the office, I'm now down with a low grade headache. Ugh. Out of the blue, DanielH called me for a meet up and I agreed. Lucky for me to catch him as it was his first off day in a month. He picked me up from Taman Bahagia LRT and we proceeded to The Teapot Place at SS2 after a fruitless discussion on a venue. I'm a Libran, so sue me. :P. A quaint place. No points for guessing that they serve specialty teas there. The interior is very English and woody, with most of the wall space taken up by shelves and shelves of teapots. Passing Fixation

3 Swiped from mr.nz . Have you ever had a fixation on something or someone that you saw in passing? The lack of information would make your mind work overtime to conjure up a perfect picture and you would be desperately pining for it. Wondering about the possibilities. No rest until you pursue it. Case I: Walking pass a clothing store, you see a shirt in the display window that catches your eye. From afar, it looks nice, cool. But due to some time constraints, you would have to walk away without scrutinizing it. Back home, that particular item of clothing would play in your mind, like an itch deep in your nether regions that wouldn't go away. You would obssess about it, telling yourself that you should have bought it and it would've looked nice in it. So, when you finally break and surrender to temptation, you would rush back to the store with a serious intent of buying the shirt, hoping that it's still available. Upon examining the garment and perhaps tryng it on

People Die, Buildings Collapse

Had a scare today. One of my more useful colleague tendered in his resignation today. Though he was scheduled to leave for another project anyway, his departure from the company would be a loss to the companys technical expertise pool. The news caused a panic. My technical manager initiated damage control and got me in to gauge the impact. Not to say the person is so indispensible, but the timing is really off. Fires are burning everywhere, things are at its most critical. It would be a pain to train up a replacement on such short notice. A few discussions later, the fellow decides to stay. He cited money problems as the main reason to leave. Does this mean he was given a counteroffer? I was told no. It is ironic in my company that people who want to travel, means more money are not given the chance, but those who do, hate it. And people leave because of it. It is just plain stupid. Will HR ever learn? Will they listen? Such a mismatch. Such mismanagement. Sigh.

After doing some reasearch on the internet, I found it to be the image at the back of the Jubilee Medal ex Montecasino which was forged 1400 years after the birth of St. Benedict. The medallion is used to ward off evil as the abbreviations are phrases normally used in exorcism rites. Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas! Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself! Your Ships come In ! Swiped from blumontheweb . A late bloomer. Something that I have tagged myself with, especially in realm of relationships and love. I wouldn't blame it on my parents, but sometimes I do wonder whether their displeasure of teenage "love" had anything to do with it. "You can start dating after you finish your studies." Does this sound familiar? Most parents use the exact same line. Most children don't give a shit. Unfortunately, I was born with the obedience gene, where one is biologically unable to resist parental commands. Or perhaps I was just a loser. Heh. Anyway, I now know and admit that my late venture into love is deeply rooted in my psyche and I guess it has now only started to unravel. But that's for another time to kupas . Oh, how I miss being a burden to my company, just sucking off its money and resources with parasitic contentment. Anyway, I've been consistently working 12-hour days and thus I normally take the train home at 9:00pm. One would think that at this hour, the stations would be less easy, but usually it's the other way round. Maybe this has to do with that fact that many KL-ites work ungodly hours or the low train frequency naturally causes a build-up. If you regularly take Star LRT, you would know that the trains heading out from Sentul Timur either go to Seri Petaling or Ampang. Hence, there are alternating trains. However, on one fateful day, two Ampang trains came back to back! -_-" Haha. Yes, I know, hardly Ripley's material, but it's exactly the point of my po

After church, I picked up KT and we had a little discussion on whether to drive or take the train to Bukit Bintang. Will come in handy. But we did get a little confused after turning into Jalan Hang Tuah. Wanting to U-turn and park at BTS, we kind of ended up at a traffic detour at Jalan Imbi and was "ushered" into Starhill Gallery. A good "mistake", parking's cheaper than BTS by RM1. But I'm really pissed with their naming convention of Adorn, Idulge, Feast, etc. Trying too hard to be special. It's just plain stupid. We arrived earlier than expected, so we walked around Lot 10 a while while waiting for Apollo and Frankie to get out of the house and fo

Sky Cafe Beancurd Swiped from williamnyk . My throat and mouth is very sensitive. I would do anything in my power to keep my throat irritation-free and my oral mucosa ulcer-free. I watch my food intake and increase my fluid intake. Basically, I avoid all sorts of "heaty" foods. Yes, the sinfully-delicious fried stuff. I even avoid durians as more than 2 pieces will also give me a sore throat. And at the slightest hint of soreness, I will gargle with Bactidol or Propolis, drink honey, take herbal supplements or drink detox teas. As a result of my defensiveness, my body has a very low tolerance for these sin foods now. If the frying oil is oxidized from too much reuse, my body would react. If the food is too salty, my mouth and tongue would get rough and irritated. And so, on one faithful day, I went to Sky Cafe at SS2 with Apollo. We sat upstairs where most of the patrons were playing Monopoly, cards or Jenga. Quite a cozy place if not for the abundance of smokers. A

I really hope my team won't burn out. Two have already packed their bags. Sick of their jobs? Trying to escape the situation? I really hope I can deliver. I really hope I need not run away. My other counterpart in the other team had already handed in her resignation, but it was rejected. "Do you want more money?" "Perhaps if we move you to another department?" For some unknown reason, every time I drink coffee, I get really hungry. Like a black hole suddenly appeared in my tummy. A very hollowed out feeling. What is the problem of having worked at numerous project sites where the bulk of your teammates have left the company? Chaos. Pure and simple. When unfinished business and problems crop up, you get the call. And having current commitments and other immediate deadlines does contribute to the ugliness. Multiply me. I need clones. If possible, never stay around till the end of any project. To see it through, so to speak. Screw that. Liberate me. Things are bad enough that I find myself doubting myself, my career path. So, when the other day I suddenly received a missed call from him and a message in my chatbox, I thought to myself, "He's getting married". And it turns out he was. We later arranged for a lunch meet and he passed me the "Red Bomb". Tai Thong Tropicana. Lunch. Wait a minute..... As I walked out from the Star LRT station I found it strange that the side of the roads were a little muddy and that the McD was boarded-up thyphoon warning style. I shrugged it off. He is only allowed to make port once every 10 years, to be with the one he loved... In the movie, Davy Jones would get down and dirty with Tia Dalma every 10 years. Ditto for Will Turner who gets to shag Elizabeth only once in 10 years. I told KH that I somewhat feel like we're in such a situation. And the great answer I got: Well, you've waited more than 25 years, so what's another decade? Blek.

I need to get her something. Me: What does she like? YY: I'm thinking of getting her jewellery. Me: Har. Berlambak-lambak la relatives you akan beli... Does she wear jewellery anyway? YY: Errr... nope. Me: Get her something else then. Electrical products for the new house? (so damn practical hor?) YY: No need. Fully-furnished. (err......thinking hard......thinking hard....errr) Me & YY: Lingerie! So off we went to look for undies. Women's Secret was too teenage. Very cotton-ny and pastel-y. So it's not exactly wedding night fare. When girls are younger, they read Cleo and

little miss egg tart Swiped from cutesypoo . Mum wasn't at home last weekend, gone gallavanting to a fundraiser in Kulai. Once again, I get some time to myself. Would have been perfect if the Significant Other was around, but it's not to be. After dropping mum off at her friend's place, I picked up KT for dinner. Had Teo Chew porride at Peng Hwa , Old Klang Road. Ordered the usual fare, stewed peanuts, french beans, century egg and salted, boiled fish. KT was picking at her food and I practically finished everything with two bowls of porridge. She had a hankering for cake, so went off to Secret Recipe , Taman Desa. However, it was closing time alredy, so we ended up at Boon Boon Cafe . Ordered a couple of ice-blended drinks, fired up the lappie to use the WiFi and browsed through Friendster for a while. That's when I received a chat message detailing that my Di is officially dating someone. Not that I didn't know, it was just some kind of open secret. Now

Sabbath

À hauteur de crabe... Swiped from viiny . Note: One week late, but biasalah... :P Just like my Saturday , the sabbath was not a day of rest for me either. After mass, mum and I drove down to Taman Desa to meet up with KT for breakfast at A1 Steamboat . We ordered their specialty, which is the fish head noodles. Each bowl costs a whopping RM6.50 ( ater several price increases ), but it really is quite good. You can choose from two variants-- fried ( ) or unfried ( smooth belly meat! ). You can even ask for additional rice wine if you like. Go early. They're open from 7:00am and if you go late, be prepared to wait or face disappointment. Two bowls are quite sufficient for three persons. After the late breakfast, mum left and I followed KT's car to The Curve to celebrate David's birthday. We arrived an hour early, so we visited the flea market. Mostly girls' stuff. Could tell that KT was quite bedazzled by all the handmade accessories and other trinkets, but I g

Away

Lonely Pier by the Sea Swiped from chew33 . Away My significant other is away. Usually also away, but not so away starting from today. God, it rhymes. Anyway, we're usually separated by the Straits of Tebrau, but this time that giant parit has been dwarfed by the South China Sea. But then, does it really matter since it's basically the same? Same time zone. Same absence. Just less SMS-es. Less calls. "What's a little more distance?" , one might say. As trivial as it sounds, as silly as it sounds, as sappy as it sounds, I think I feel it. Missing you... PS: Dedicated to SK and JM too!
