Food Diary : March 2019

Image
Restoran Yong Hua is used to be one of my usual breakfast haunts. But when mum stopped going to the United Garden morning, we naturally stopped eating there as well. Very sinful options there, with my favourites being the CCCF, which is fried chu cheong fun ( replace kway teow with CCF ), and the dry curry noodles. Just look at that layer of oil! In the afternoon, I let my tummy rest a bit with. I just fried an egg and dumped it between a toasted bun. But for dinner, I jumpstarted my appetite again at Restoran Soon Lok , Puchong Jaya. With mum, SK, KH, and I, we could order quite a few of their signature dishes. The roast duck was nice, but not the best I had. The signature tofu was good though, and the big pot of fish head noodles was really creamy. After dinner we had some ice cream at the nearby Nasi Lemak Factory . Talk about a healthy diet.

Jolly Japan

Due to an inexplicable reason, I had been avoiding Pho Vietz at Atria Shopping Gallery. But after I had exhausted all the choices there, I relented. Mum and I shared a bowl of 4 beef pho. The Vietnamese equivalent of the 4 cheese pizza? It was a huge bowl of noodles, and came with premium Australian beef slices. beef balls, brisket, and the more common cuts. The soup noodles didn't "Wow" me, but the steamed rice rolls did. Texture-wise, it's like a cousin of HK CCF. Loved the taste. A great snack. More often that not, Atria had some event going on at the ground floor. That week we were lucky enough to catch the Atria Japan Festival 2019. The children's cosplay competition kept us mesmerized for hours. Among the best was a girl who dressed up as Edea Kramer from Final Fantasy VII. Got goosebumps when she came on stage with "FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC" playing in the background. Really brought back memories. Her mother must be a fan girl. She must h

Bless This Home

Image
Congratulations to Bless for getting a place to call his own at Saujana Putra. He invited mum, SK, Lifebook, and I to a small housewarming. SK prepared a pot of stewed chicken rice for the party. The travel time there felt a little long maybe because the area seemed a little remote to me. Think the demographic is predominantly Malay. Bless had bought a studio unit in a large condo complex consisting of several blocks. The renovations and interior design were quite good ( with a touch from Lifebook, definetely tastefully furnished ), but he was kinda pissed with the contractor who did a shoddy on his built-in cabinets. First we had dinner, then to help the food go down, we went out for a walk. Never had I seen a place with several themed facilities. Even when it came to playgrounds, they had several options-- adventure, pirate, and spaceship! Talk about being spoiled for choice. Left quite early because it was a Sunday night. On our way home, we stopped at Family Mart Taman Eq

Birthday in Bangsar

Image
On the Thursday before KH's actual birthday, we had a celebration dinner at Chez Gaston KL by Rendez-Vous , an unpretentious French restaurant located at an unlikely shop lot at Jalan Bangsar Utama 9. Truth be told, the venue looks more suited for a mamak shop or Malay nasi campur . But don't be fooled, it's the real deal. The reason for the weird timing was because KH would be away in Singapore during weekend to attend the Nu Skin Success Seminar. Had a couple of meat dishes, a toasted with some wine. At the end of dinner, the owner gave us an Eiffel Tower key chain which now hangs from KH's rear view mirror. The night was still young, so we thought to grab some dessert at Third Wave . Mana tahu the shop had closed down. Ended up in Starbucks instead and shared a cascara latte. Cascara is actually the skin or peel of the coffee cherry. Something that usually discarded actually has an interesting flavour. P.S. : Some trivia~ my late maternal grandmother used to

Driving to Dong Zhen

Image
On a Monday evening, KH persuaded me to join him on a trip to Fo Guang Shan Dong Zhen Temple in Jenjarom. His new friend Delon wanted to see the decorative lanterns that Fo Guang Shan put up during the Lunar New Year. Delon thought that KH would be able to drive his MPV, but he took over the wheel himself after seeing KH struggle. Personally, I had never been to Dong Zhen temple, and had never thought of braving the crowds to see it. Getting there wasn't a smooth affair as traffic was quite bad from Petaling Jaya down towards Subang. And the roads into Jenjarom were dark and unmarked. Once we turned in Jalan Sungai Buaya, we started seeing the traffic. Passed by Ban Siew Keng  which seems to be half food street, half temple. Should have eaten there instead of having the expensive and limited vegetarian food in Dong Zhen temple. Left our car at the roadside and walked in to admire the lights. Much effort was put into decorating the grounds. Not an easy task as the grounds co

Lebanese and Lantern

On a Friday evening, mum suddenly had free tickets to an event at Jalan Khoo Teik Ee in Imbi. It was held in a building that has no name. When I searched for it on Google Maps Street View, I finally understood why. From the visual, I recognized it as the mysterious building that supposedly did not receive DBKL's blessings to construct. Don't know how that went, but the building still stands and is still operating. Right after work, I took the MRT to Bukit Bintang, and walked a short distance to Imbi. On my way there, I saw a hunk standing in front of a Lebanese restaurant at Jalan Bukit Bintang. Would definitely would want to try the kebab that he's selling. Mum's event wasn't done yet, so I chilled at Restoran Meng Chuan , ordering a plate of wat tan hor . Years ago, I used to frequent the place with my manager. The noodles are still good, but freaking expensive. Once mum was done, her friend dropped us at Berjaya Times Square. Since it was a long time since

Durian Double Date

Image
By special request, SK requested that her birthday be celebrated on Valentine's Day. Although it was a work day, we also managed to get Apollo and QueerRanter-D to memeriahkan majlis . Like a double date, and SK was the fifth wheel! The venue she chose was Cerdito at Puchong Jaya. KH and I arrived much earlier than scheduled, so we we had our very own VDay thing at Nasi Lemak Factory . Shared a sampling size bowl of wantan noodles with pork curry. The noodles are thin and wet, very Hong Kong style, and the curry was quite spicy. Expensive in my opinion, and nothing to shout about. We even had time to have a scoop of rum and raisin ice cream. Kinda strong. And I really like the interior decoration using flower-themed sand blocks. When it was time for dinner, there was a bit of confusion whether they would let us order from the ala carte menu or not. SK had earlier called in and given the green light, but then then the waitress informed us that only the Valentine's menu

Apollo's CNY Lunch

Image
Apollo's mum's CNY lunch gathering is a yearly event that cannot be missed. As usual, she outdid herself with an array delicious home-cooked dishes. For 2019, she incorporated much ingredients that were sourced from her recent trip to Cameron Highlands. The most unique was the expensive 'ice vegetable' that has a permanent dewy appearance. Boleh dimakan begitu sahaja , or dipped with salad dressing. It has quite a crunch, but I would say that it's an acquired taste. Kindy bean-y like arugula. My sister, QueerRanter-D, SK, and Mei were invited as well. Thank goodness we did not need to finish all that food because there was another round during dinner time. We could relax, and cool down with some iced Bailey's. I met up with KH later that night. We had dinner at Mokka Cafe , and later had a yumcha session with Silver. Finally met Silver's boyfriend, Rich. They make a cute couple.

Let's Dance

Image
By association, I was invited to a fun CNY party organized by Big Monster's bestie's grandmother! Although the family is Muslim by marriage, CNY is still a big deal for them. Every year, the matriarch would invite her relatives over for a boisterous gathering. Whenever someone walked in, they would blast the classic song "財神到", and greet each other raucously. The food served was very more Hari Raya than Raya Cina. As the party went on, they started a dance off, and boy could they dance! Amazed by their moves without the influence of alcohol. To encourage everyone to get on the dance floor, they even prepared lucky draw red packets! They really know how to let their hair down. Later that night, we had dinner with Lifebook, Bless, SK, and KH at Ding Tai Fung , Empire Shopping Gallery. Not a place that I usually eat at, so SK did all the ordering. Then it was coffee and cake at Whisk . On a whim, mum suggested that we visit an old family friend who lives in USJ. Be
