September 11th Shoes by eyes of disarray
September 11th Shoes, swiped from eyes of disarray on Flickr.

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the suicide attacks on the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York and three other coordinated attacks. That episode elevated the word "terrorism" into a household term and cranked up the paranoia against Islam. Ten years is a long time, but I remember I was home alone watching TV. My show was interrupted and footage of an airplane crashing into one of towers was shown. Vaguely remember having my jaw drop open and scooting closer to the TV set. When a second plane crashed into the tower, I was really stunned.

Do you remember what you were doing when disaster struck?

I was in Tanjung Malim. The guys in religious robes at the mamak stall stood up and clapped their hands. I felt sickened by their callous act and almost puked.

Bengbeng - OMGOSH!!! That's so heartless!!!!

I remember it was late in the evening and I was in the living room with my family, watching TV when suddenly the show was cut to give way to the breaking news.

To all who perished, may you rest in peace.

I was in my apartment in Arlington, Virginia, when a friend called and said, "Turn on your TV, a plane hit the World Trade Center." As my partner and I watched the scenes from New York I heard a large plane flying low near my building. Jumping up, I looked out the window but didn't see anything. Figuring it was simply taking an unusual route toward the nearby National Airport, I said "I guess I'll get jumpy whenever I hear a plane haha." A couple minutes later there was breaking news that the Pentagon, 2 miles away, had been hit. The sound of that plane, on its way to its target, will stay with me forever.

I was oncall and watching the tv during breaktime. My colleague did her med school in the US and burst into tears.

@Anon:
Malaysians or not, they perished. Hopefully after ten years, their families have some kind of closure.

@Savante:
Wow. She must have had quite a connection with the US.
